    L31 knock after rebuild

Also, I came across something awhile ago and now I'm thinking about it, it was a TSB for 96-99 5.0 and 5.7s I believe. I'll try and find it again, but it said that GM had left extra oil clearance on the #5 main cap and in some cases the crank was supported by only 1-4 mains. And under load the...

    L31 knock after rebuild

Yeah you see, the machinist in my area that I went to told me the opposite. He said the piston had to be removed in order for the rod to be resized (3 rods actually) and he told me that he had no way of removing the pistons without breaking or deforming them. I had no reason to doubt him, I'm...

    L31 knock after rebuild

here's the video. Also, my sound isn't quite as loud as this one seems but sounds exactly the same. Especially from below the engine

    L31 knock after rebuild

I used a dremel to cut through the small end on the old connecting rods. Wrist pins slid right out and I didn't deform or break any pictons that way. Bought new rods. They were out of round and that's the one thing I took to a machinist, to get resized. He ended up having my parts for almost 2...

    L31 knock after rebuild

I get what you're saying. What I found when doing my research was that 1.5 to 2.5 thousandths was acceptable on the mains and that #5 was supposed to have a little extra because it's where the oil pump is, which made sense to me. I'm certainly no expert. I measured everything myself and had a...

    L31 knock after rebuild

I have a 96 sierra 5.7l I blew up a while ago that got put on the back burner for a couple months. Recently finished the rebuild and got the truck running today. Motor has reground crank, new connecting rods and piston rings, new main, rod, and cam bearings, and new oil pump. Crank journals and...

TBI gas tank in Vortec truck?

Just wondering if the gas tank from an 88-95 truck is the same as 96+. My 96 needs replaced and I have the one out of my old truck which is a 94. Almost positive they're the same capacity wise. Both 28(?) gallon I think. 26? Something like that, not entirely sure. I just need to know if the pump...

    400 cracked block?

Question for ya, so I bought a bore gauge and micrometer to measure everything the right way. The mic is a starrett and the bore gauge is a used but in great shape Mitutoyo and neither one was cheap. These are not new to me, Im comfortable using them. Had my buddy who's a machinist double check...

    400 cracked block?

Oh ok that makes sense. Mine are smooth, matter of fact I'm not sure if I've ever seen the cracked type on a sbc. Not that I can remember anyways

    400 cracked block?

Well I just ordered a bore gauge online, should be here in a couple days. I'd rather have the right tools to check everything and make sure it's just that one that's out of round. And when a rod is resized, how is that done? Is the hole just made bigger? Or is the cap cut down a thousandth or 2...

    400 cracked block?

Thank you for the input. This site is loaded with knowledge. My apologies if all this seems kind of basic or stupid questions. I'm no stranger to turning wrenches but this is the first time I'm completely re-doing a bottom end myself. While I understand it all for the most part I second guess...

    400 cracked block?

What are your thoughts on a reman crank? I'm thinking that's my best option right now.

    400 cracked block?

I think I'll order one tonight. Advance has the best deal for sure, with 20% off online it's 195 shipped and it'll be here in 3 or 4 days. After I get the core charge back I'll be in it about 160 bucks with bearings. Don't think I'll find cheaper than that. My rods are all good I think, I don't...

    400 cracked block?

Needs a crank too. I have new rod and main bearings. Complete gasket set too. The 400 was just an idea, since it's sitting right in front of me with no use. I'm thinking I'm gonna put the 350 back together for now and take a little time and do the 400 right. Have an 88 k1500 rcsb that's just...

    400 cracked block?

Yeah the short block is good to go. Was put together by a friend of mine and I trust his work. Had it in an old 60s something pickup. Truck was totalled so he pulled the motor out. He'll give me heads too if I want em, just figured the vortecs would be best for power and keeping fuel injection.

Crank is no good. Already got deep grooves.

    400 cracked block?

Alot of people seem to love them. Met a few guys that loathe them as well. I don't care I just want the truck to move under its own power without making noise other than the obnoxious exhaust. Could you elaborate on the steam holes? And another thing, from what I've seen online most people bore...

    400 cracked block?

Yeah I figured a tune would be in order. I need one anyways for the manual trans. And any reason the flat tappet cam can't be used? I know roller is the better option but to be frank this truck is a piece of **** lol I'm not shooting for big numbers here and I've spent WAY too much money on this...

    400 cracked block?

Buddy of mine has this 400 laying around he told me I could have. Gave it a once over and noticed it looks like it's cracked. Only its real shallow and looks awfully uniform to be a crack. I'm not entirely sure so figured I'd get some other opinions on it. Was also wondering if anyone's used a...

Where to find NV3500 factory service manual

It's a long shot with a 5 year old thread, but any chance you still have that? The link you posted isn't working for me. I'm just starting the rebuild on mine and I'm finding alot of conflicting/not accurate info. I've never rebuilt a manual before and have more than a few questions. Any help...

    Exhaust leak and running rough

New to the forum but I've used the site to help figure things out before. I have a 1996 sierra 1500 4x4 with a 5.7. Bought the truck a few months ago and has been relatively problem free since then. I was on a long drive a couple days ago, about 100 miles, and I've been making this same trip...
