    Cranks but won't start.

I once had the center contact in the distributor cap break at the end of a long trip. Thank heaven I didn’t shut her down until I got home. It was an Autozone product. I now use NAPA caps with brass internals and contacts exclusively.

    Resetting ECM

Try some Seafoam injector cleaner. Also, what tune up parts did you replace? The dist cap/rotor, air filter, wires and plugs could act this way. So could a loose throttle body.

    Any MPG Fans here??

My ‘88 C1500 is absolutely stock. When my dad died in ‘07, he left her to me with 89k miles on her. I removed the camper shell and installed a tonneau cover which I much preferred, replaced the towing mirrors with the stock ones, and switched to full synthetic engine oil. And then I carefully...

    Cutting out during hard acceleration

How old are the plugs, dist cap, aor filter, pcv valve and plug wires? I had your symptoms and she just needed an old fashioned tune up. I also used sea foam injector cleaner. That took care of it.

    Running terribly

Have you checked the distributor cap, rotor, wires and plugs? Also, run some Seafoam through the fuel system to clean the injectors. Also check the air cleaner and pcv valve and it’s hose. Lastly, spray wd-40 around the base of the throttle body to see if you have a vacuum leak there.

Ideas needed for 1988 GMC C1500 longbed restore

Thanks. No, it was on the lot. I advised him to talk to the owner and avoid the going back and forth. They settled on a price and they started doing their finance thing. He said: “oh, I’ll give you a check for the entire amount right now” and pulled out his check book. They called his bank...

    89 sportside silverado regeneration

I inherited my Dad’s ‘88 std cab, long bed with 89k miles. It, too, has a 350 TBI and a 4 spd automatic. It was also garaged after he died. I let it sit for a few years. When I revived it I put on new tires, yanked the after marked Jacobs ignition, replaced the brakes pads/shoes, changed the...

    Engine oil

I use 10w30 High Mileage Mobil 1. I have for years. 165k on the clock and she has great oil pressure and compression. I get it in 5 qt jugs from Amazon at a great price. As has been said, Dino oil should be changed about every 3k miles; I go longer with Mobil 1. There’s lots of science you can...

    Another dead igntion module

In my ‘88 Silverado I found using a cheap cap and rotor lasted about six months. The system ate aluminum contacts in the cap. I went to brass from Napa and the contacts last forever. And no dust from the breakdown of the cheap stuff.

What’s cheapest easiest way to get more hp & torque

I think a complete and careful, quality part tuneup (not inexpensive stuff like autozone, etc.) is the best place to start. I get my parts from NAPA. Stick with Wix air filters, full synthetic oil, perfect tire pressure, new low resistance wires, and a free flowing exhaust (I use a 3” one into...

    Dual Exhaust Question

When my dad bought the ‘88 Silverado C1500 (350 C. I.) I now drive, he wanted a new exhaust system. He settled on a 3” terminating into a Flowmaster 1 into 2 that exits behind the passenger side tire. It sounds great and helped a bit with performance.

Would you drive 2300 miles based on these conditions -

I’d daily drive it for awhile. The constant day to day grind will uncover things like cooling system, alternator, starter, ignition, etc. Brake pads, shoes, wheel bearing attention, tires, and the like should be looked at before daily driving in my opinion. The only time my ‘88 Silverado let me...
