Rebuilding an engine - what precision instruments to do measurements

Well, back from the dead. I found another block already machined for about the price of what the machine show was going to charge me. This is a Gen IV though, so things are getting over my head: so I started a thread here if someone is bored or gets insomnia. Wish me luck...

    99 L31 Burb won't start

Yes, I think that's it! The jumper relay may be easier now that I see that. OP, I hope it's something small and not your fuel pump. Those can get expensive and changing them seem to be a real chore.

    99 L31 Burb won't start

Well, I'll be darn. I assumed all GM trucks had that wire. But you are right, I went to check my 5.7 OBS and I don't see it either. I could of sworn it was there somewhere. @Schurkey would know for sure. I do see it on my 99, but that's the NBS. Here's what it looks like on the 99. Again, I'm...

    99 L31 Burb won't start

There's also a wire just hanging there near the fuse block that's supposed to be for energizing the fuel pump. But I'll be honest, I've (edit: never had to) jump it myself.

Swap K3500 Front on K1500 Suburban?

14 bolt 6 lug rear swap is difficult? Not from the same generation of trucks. The 2500 6 lug 9.5" SF axle is what you want. It's a direct swap. It has drum brakes. But if you have the 8 lug version in 10.5", I see you wanting to run that one.

How to fid correct rear wheel bearing and seals

Maybe you got the wrong part? Did you remove the old bearings? How do they compare to the new? As far as I know, there was just one axle in that generation trucks with that suspension. You may want to go ask the folks at performancetruck.net They are are going to be more knowledgeable on that...

    4L80e from a TD into a 350 K1500

The output shafts are different between the 4L60e (27 spline) and the 4L80e (32 spline). So you can't mate a transfer case that was in a 4L60e into a 4L80e and vice versa. However, since GM did produce the same transfer case behind both transmissions, the solution is to change the input shaft...

    5.7 vortec or 5.3LS?

Agreed on the HP/displacement on DOHC vs pushrod. Great for a light vehicle. Too bad those DOHC engines in those trucks get almost the same mileage a 3/4 ton with a pushrod, but with half the payload capacity. I think the DOHC engine you speak of was actually the one used in limited numbers in...

    5.7 vortec or 5.3LS?

I take mpg claims from folks from the internet with a grain of salt. You can't compare a souped up very light 1500 chasis vehicle with a modified tune (still meet emissions?) to a heavy 2500/2500HD/3500 with a stock tune. It's an apples to oranges comparison. My stock K3500 CCLB srw with the...

    Need help diagnosing after rebuild.

Those fuel trims look out of whack. I usually see these in percentage point. Less than 5% +/- is ideal. 10-15 is getting out of range, but some ECUs seem to still compensate up to 25%. Over that, causes driveability issues.

Help with a 6 lug axle swap i did

Yup, that's what my brother did to his C1500 RCSB. He got the axle, knuckles, calipers and rotors from a 2500 6 lug ECLB. Guy threw in some generic 6 lug tires. I think he said there's a difference in the backspacing running some newer 20" rims so he had to do some spacers on the front. I don't...

Help with a 6 lug axle swap i did

Is that axle you swapped the 14 bolt 9.5" 6 lug by any chance? That was the standard axle from the 2500 trucks with 6 lugs. Some K1500 with RPO code F44 also got that axle. That one will require a conversion U joint. My brother did a similar swap, I don't know the part number. Are the axle...

    1967 Dodge D100

JB "weld" that and ship it! LOL So it's a complete engine? I thought it was just the block. I think I already asked you this before, but what welder are you using? I've been using this little Century Inverter Flux core welder I bought for misc. stuff about and up to 1/4" or so, and seems to...

    4L80e from a TD into a 350 K1500

Yes, it can be swapped into the K1500. Not "too" bad, but requires some modifications. You need a SBC/4L80e flexplate, rewire the electrical transmission case connector and add the additional speed sensor, repin some wires at the ECU, and ECU reflash, change the input shaft of the transfer...

Problem on the 'limp' home yesterday.

Um, I don't think so, but I may be wrong. On a bad catalytic converter I think you just get a efficiency code or something like that. Remember, the cats are for emissions. The downstream O2s are to measure that the cats are "working" and doing the chemical reaction magic. Some guys get rid of...

Problem on the 'limp' home yesterday.

Those injector drop pressures look fantastic. You have to do system of elimination. You can almost certainly eliminate injector causing a miss at this point. Edit: but isn't static fuel pressure a bit low? I don't know what the minimum fuel pressure is for the MPFI... My 5.7 Vortec was around...

    5.3 4L80e swap into 5.7 with blown 4l60e on a 1999 2 door tahoe in decent shape

I drive an ECSB that I did a 4.3/4L60e to 5.3/4L80e. Engine/transmission is stock , but I really like that combination. It's a 99 NBS and 2wd though, so I can't help on the guages and transfer case on your truck. But I did a thread on the swap and has useful information on the 4L80e swap here...

    Oil Analysis

Thanks for posting this. I was wondering what the transmission oil analysis would show... But I don't know what all this means. Frankly, I don't even know what clutch or band band friction material are made up of...:( The few transmission fluid changes I've done always have a but of friction...

Help deciding on how to spend 10k on making my truck fast.

Do you want to keep it manual? Or automatic is okay? 5.7 Vortec/4L80e swap would be a natural swap for automatic. A 10k budget you can upgrade to a 383. You can also do the LS swap if you'd like. Do a search on here. Lots and lots of threads. Are you doing the work yourself? Have you...

    Rawhide and The Burb

That's highway robbery! A transmission master overhaul kit is around $500-ish for that unit. I bought one last year to rebuild mine: has all new frictions, steels, ALL rubber seals and gaskets, shift and PWM solenoids, pillow switch, (depending on year, molded pistons), pan gasket and filter...

    Oil Analysis

Sorry, I apologize; I wasn't trying to be a a$$ :-( I was just asking a question about what the purpose of oil analysis was, that's it. And I clearly didn't know what that was. That's the same oil I use. What I meant to say is that "generally" folks can fall into debates about oil brand, etc...

    Tuning

Black bear performance is a popular mail-order tuner. Depending on where you are, there may be local tuners you can drop off your ECU and pick it up same or next few days too. Here, there's a lot of those guys offering services thru FBMP, OfferUp, etc.
