88 Suburban 350 running badly, poor mileage. TBI rebuild time.

What changed? I put it back together 100% and drove it. It cleaned up pretty quickly. Part of the thick fuel smell was because I was running the truck with the TBI fully exposed, I think. I've yet to check the mileage but will report back when I have :)

88 Suburban 350 running badly, poor mileage. TBI rebuild time.

I did make an ALDL cable and found an Arduino sketch that purports to read the 160 baud data off the E connector. But, I wasn't able to make it work. I'm probably doing something wrong :) It's okay, I just decided to button it up for now so I can move onto some other things. I'm definitely going...

That is a good question. I need to nail down my 160 baud ALDL setup and get back to you on that.

88 Suburban 350 running badly, poor mileage. TBI rebuild time.

I went ahead and picked up a filter and got it put together today. I did the IAC reset procedure: 30 seconds on the jumper, pull the IAC plug, back off the idle screw, fire it up. It was idling around 2000 rpm (I'm guessing, I don't have a tach) and there was no way to get it to idle below what...

Yup that's the one. I didn't think they'd be something you could buy separately. Thanks for that.

88 Suburban 350 running badly, poor mileage. TBI rebuild time.

Started putting it together tonight to find out that I either lost one of the filters for an injector, or it's missing from the kit. And I threw all the old stuff away of course, long gone. Looks like I'll be ordering another rebuild kit.

I ended up with some 400 and 600 grit sand paper, it cleaned it right up. Now I just need to find time to put it all back together.

Thanks guys! I wish I could just afford to buy a rebuilt unit, that would be sweet! But it's not possible. I'm going to buy some solvent (chemtool or similar) and give it a soak and see if that won't take care of it. I'll get it as smooth as I can and rely on the gaskets to do their job...

Thank you all for the help thus far. I'm learning! I've never rebuilt an aluminum throttle body, and I find I'm having a hard time getting the old gasket material off. Rather than google it, I attacked it with a straight blade razor. When I saw little tiny bits of aluminum come off, I stopped! I...

And that would explain why it looks brazed. I said welded but... yeah. brazed. Thanks again.

Got it, thank you. I have another question: The bend in the vacuum port tube and the look of this Fuel Pressure Regulator leads me to believe that this is used to be adjustable and was for some reason welded shut. It just doesn't look stock. Can someone confirm? Or do they all look like this?

Thank you @PlayingWithTBI I appreciate the direction. Can you direct me to a way to make the ALDL cable? Electronics is a hobby, and so I'd rather build than buy if at all possible. Or will the aforementioned TTL serial work fine?

Interesting! I will consider that. Thank you. Thank you, this I did not know. From what I've read, my '88 ECM is 8192 baud, TTL serial, and I can use an Arduino with the chip removed, TX/RX pins shorted to each other in A and ground going to M. Does that sound about right? I'm still trying to...

Thank you- I'll just do the rebuild normally then. I really do appreciate the honest response. It looks like I'm going to have to build a scanner. WinALDL and an Arduino should do the trick, and then I need to chase down a fuel pressure gauge. Thanks for the tips!

88 Suburban 350 running badly, poor mileage. TBI rebuild time.

Howdy everyone, Sorry for the long first post. TL;DR: My Suburban idles badly, gets bad mileage, and so I'm rebuilding the TBI and need suggestions for what else I may need to do. My 1988 Suburban 1/2 ton 4x4 has been running poorly. The PO said the rig had been in his wifes family since new...
