    1996 K1500 Restoration/Maaco Paint

When I pull my engine I plan on degreasing and painting the frame under. I’ll probably use a brush and a good outdoor black paint to avoid spray drift. I’ll order some of these shields too.

Did our trucks come with these and someone took mine off or were they optional?

    1996 K1500 Restoration/Maaco Paint

When I bought the truck the air conditioning didn’t work, only the heater. So I ordered a new compressor kit, condenser, the 2 pressure lines on top of the engine, drier, and dash control panel. Instead of paying a shop to fix it, I installed everything myself and bought a vacuum pump at Harbor...

    1996 K1500 Restoration/Maaco Paint

I bought an engine loom kit from I think Summit Racing online. It came in a plastic bag with all of the different sizes needed. I want to say it was around $30. I started to put it on but decided to wait until I do my engine replacement. When the old engine is out I plan on cleaning the bay...

    1996 K1500 Restoration/Maaco Paint

Thanks. I ordered black Z71 decals to replace the factory gray. When I had the business lettering done I tipped the installer $20 to stick them on for me since he does that for a living.

    1996 K1500 Restoration/Maaco Paint

Forgot to add, I removed the badges/emblems myself prior to dropping it off. I also removed the cheesy factory pinstripe and the chrome wheel well trim/silver Chevrolet band on the gate. I bought new emblems on Amazon and installed them myself.

    1996 K1500 Restoration/Maaco Paint

They removed and reinstalled my window visors. They were going to remove my black diamond plate bedside caps too but I asked them not to. I think they taped some other things off but not sure. I don’t have any over spray anywhere. I opted not to get the door jams done. Since it wasn’t a color...

    1996 K1500 Restoration/Maaco Paint

Thank you. I did my research and read all of the Maaco reviews ahead of time. I’m glad I took the chance and used them. I couldn’t see spending 5K on a paint job for a $4,000 truck. For the same 5K I’m able to have a Maaco paint job, new wheels, new GM Goodwrench crate motor, and remanufactured...

    1996 K1500 Restoration/Maaco Paint

I ditched my factory wheels and bought some AR wheels through Tire Rack. They were around $425 total, shipped to my front door. I paid a local shop to swap my tires over. My new wheels are 16X8 with a different offset than stock. I preferred the more aggressive stance. No lift or anything was...

    The Stupid Engine Questions Thread

I talked the original owner. They bought it new in 1996 and kept it until 2007 (11 yrs). They said it still had the original engine and transmission when they sold it. The car fax verifies the first ownership transfer took place in 2007 at 143K miles. This makes me wonder if the 99 engine is a...

    The Stupid Engine Questions Thread

Any ideas on when this engine was built and whether it’s a replacement crate motor? 10243880 stamped on the back bellhousing flange. GM 5.7 LG and SMCl is on the back too. The date code is H269. Couldn’t find anything on the stamping pad after I moved the alternator bracket. It’s in my 1996 K1500.

These are pictures of the day I picked it up in their parking lot, prior to the new wheels, etc.

    1996 K1500 Restoration/Maaco Paint

I went with the red they recommended/close factory match. I dropped it off on a Tuesday and picked it up the following Tuesday. It was a Maaco in San Antonio.

    1996 K1500 Restoration/Maaco Paint

That was my situation as well. I had some clear peeling on top and just wanted to brighten the truck up. I wasn’t interested in a 5K paint job. My body damage was minor. Golf ball size dent on the cab corner, few other dings and a fairly deep scratch was about it.

    1996 K1500 Restoration/Maaco Paint

After the paint job I ordered new 1500 badges for the doors. Instead of replacing the silver CHEVROLET band on the tailgate I put a Silverado badge on the bottom left and a Chevrolet badge on the bottom right, just like the 99 models have.

    1996 K1500 Restoration/Maaco Paint

I’m happy with it. I had some body repair done and went with the integrated clear coat package. Total price was $1,308. I think $400 of that was the body work.

I bought this truck in March of 2018. It had 240K on it and was in good condition. I’ve been slowly bringing it back to life with new paint, carpet, bed caps, AR wheels, stereo, etc. Just thought I would share the progress. Larry

    Casting Number ID

I have a 1996 K1500 with a 5.7 (L31) engine. I’m trying to determine whether the engine has been replaced with a new crate motor. I removed the alternator bracket to inspect the stamping pad bad can’t see any numbers. On the back of the block (drivers side) I see the GM 5.7 LG with SMCI under...
