How Much Can YOU Haul IN 1/2 Ton???

It's funny, the wife and I were talking about that whole adventure and it was me wondering how much we overloaded that truck that lead me to this post. When I Googled GMT400 load capacity overload or something, this thread came up. Figured I'd log in and share the story.

How Much Can YOU Haul IN 1/2 Ton???

I just did the numbers quick in my head. I figured a 4x8 bed, 2 feet high, plus the mound like in your photo. converted that to 64 cubic feet. Asked google the weight of sand per cubic foot. It said 115lbs. 64x115=7,360. I figured plus the mound, and us roughly 7,500 lbs. Seemed high to me, but...

How Much Can YOU Haul IN 1/2 Ton???

I know this is an old thread. I just came across it and I thought you might find this amusing...or something. I once worked at a remote camp in Northern Ontario. They had an old 93'ish Silverado 1500 4x4. One winter my wife and I got stuck with the Christmas shift. In other words doing all the...

    HT383E into a K3500

Frankly the HT383E is the engine that the truck should have come with. Or at least been available as an option. I'd certainly take it over a stock 454 which is a more difficult swap and not worth the effort IMO for an unmodified 454. I'd at least want cam, springs, headers, and a tune. Also, I'm...

Still got mine. Still happy with it.

Help me decide... 383 or LSx?

Yeah, I felt bad replacing my L31. It had over 330,000km on it and still ran great. I put off the 383 upgrade until I found it a good home. AFAIK it's still running fine in a buddy's old Chevelle. He dropped it straight in, just added an Edlebrock Vortec manifold and a Holley carb.

Help me decide... 383 or LSx?

I think your last line says it all. Budget "I'd like to try and stay under $6000" Unless you go full on junkyard commando, Driveway Engineer (YouTube guy) and get everything used and do all the work yourself, you'll be hard pressed to get an LS swap done for under $6k. Plus it'll take you...

    TERRIBLE slow performance in snow

You'd be surprised. It's actually fairly common on older vehicles for the ebrake not to retract completely when released. A stuck e-brake doesn't necessarily mean a fully engaged one. It only has to be enough drag to affect the differential, in which case the vehicle will behave much as the OP...

    305 Vortec to 335 stroker

I don't think you'll find a lot on this because the cost and effort don't justify the power results. Also the 305 block has some inherent design weaknesses that are hard to ignore. If you want to do this just for fun and to try something different, go for it. But if you're looking for the best...

    TERRIBLE slow performance in snow

Does it have a G80? Look in the build sheet in the glove box. If it does, it may be broken. If not, it sounds like it may have a sticking e-brake on one side. If it has factory tires, or all seasons or whatever, get rid of them. I have BFG TA-KO2's on mine and a G80, and it's like a damned...

    HP Tuners

GMTC isn't dead. They overhauled the site and you're probably trying to get there from a bookmark when the entry URL has changed. I just logged in to confirm this again. Still up. New site works fine. Old content migrated fine.

    HP Tuners

Great question, I wondered this myself. Looked at both HP Tuners and EFI Live. Also watching to see if the new free system the LS guys are using with OBD modules gets expanded to work on these older units. I bought an OBDLink MX Plus on that hope. Great module to have anyway BTW. Is there a...

Why isn't the 99 Tahoe listed on any kits and why only 2 door?

The 98 and 99 Tahoe's have completely different front suspensions. I leased a 98 and was surprised when I replaced it with a 99 to see that (AFAIR) they had switched from coil spring front end to torsion bar. This would definitely make and suspension kits incompatible. It also leaves you with a...

Ball joints + upper control arms replacement. Any tips?

Thanks for this. It helped itself and it also confirmed that the electronic FSM I received is legit since the corresponding pages match up.

Ball joints + upper control arms replacement. Any tips?

I contacted Helm Inc., they no longer stocks anything for my vehicle. I bought an electronic version of the FSM off e-bay. It seems slightly shady, but it is the real deal as far as the data and software on the DVD. Cost me $16.95 USD + $15 S&H and import fee. Can't complain.

Oh, for future reference, in case anyone else needs this info... Part or connection -- Torque (ft-lb) Upper control arm-to-frame nut -- 140 Lower control arm-to-frame nuts -- 121 Balljoint-to-control arm bolts -- 17 Lower balljoint-to-knuckle nut -- 84 Upper balljoint-to-knuckle nut -- 94...

Ball joints + upper control arms replacement. Any tips?

Thanks! Any suggestions on a reasonably priced source? Do most people get them from ebay or what? Meanwhile, I went and bought the Haynes online version for my truck which did have all the torque specs, though the actual replacement procedure pages are a little weak. But I have enough to manage...

Ball joints + upper control arms replacement. Any tips?

Unfortunately that other thread, though very interesting and informative, mostly relates to the 1500 models with the stamped lower control arms. Mine is a 3/4 ton with the forged lower control arms. I'm guessing they have different torque specs.

Ball joints + upper control arms replacement. Any tips?

Good stuff, thanks. Don't have an FSM, so that's why I was asking about torque specs. I did a complete brake job in the fall so just planning a minor inspection there. Put in new Pro Stop brakes, including new calipers. As for the rest, I'm planning to do this in two parts (I know, but that's...

Ball joints + upper control arms replacement. Any tips?

On my 1999 K2500 Suburban (with forged lower control arms) I'm going to replace the upper and lower ball joints on both sides. I went ahead and bought the full new upper A arm kit from Rock Auto with included ball joints since it was pretty reasonable and I'll then have new A arm bushings as...

Replacing o2 sensors ... wide range in $$$, worth paying up?

I grabbed the Bosch sensors from Rock Auto. Been very happy with them. Definitely better quality than the OEM units, especially the wires and insulation. I expect them to last for years. Like OEM, they even included anti-seize on the threads.

    CSFI to MPFI question.

Yeah, I thought he was talking about the TB spacer, not the plenum spacer. Nice to hear that the plenum spacers actually work. It makes sense given all the crap floating around in there messing up airflow.

What happened to all the Heavy Duty suspension kits?

You seem to be confusing a quality OEM replacement and a good warranty with something that exceeds OEM specifications. Since everyone seemed to get hung up on the price of my first example instead of the point, here's another example. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DDUZEB4/

What happened to all the Heavy Duty suspension kits?

Ignore the price, it was just an example of what heavy duty means vs. Moog.
