    Oil Question

Running a heavier gear oil will not hurt anything. Use any multi weight engine oil that ends in 30 or 40. Synthetics last longer between changes. Your truck won't particularly care what it has as long at its clean. Rotella T6 is god's spit in the motorcycle world, it is an excellent...

    Manual transmission ratios

All full sized gm trucks got the wide ratio nv3500. You should have good results by regearing if you didn't want to have to find a new truck. My gmt800 half ton has the 4.3 with 4.10s and the nv3500, and it will tow well in excess of what a half ton should ever pull, so I imagine a 305 would...

    Airbag Went Off

An airbag going off randomly is a huge issue. Like, lawsuit and lawyers huge issue. It doesn't matter if a vehicle is older than dirt, past warranty, blah blah blah, if you're driving and an airbag decides to go awol it could cause a serious accident. Not to mention if you had a driver's...

Alignment Cam Bolts 1990 C1500 Drop Spindles

I very much recommend an air chisel. When I rebuilt the entire front end on my 1990 c1500, those knockout tabs took me HOURS. One side wasn't so bad, the other side had much less room. The best part is the instructions that came with the camber bolts said "simply knock out the factory tabs"...

Long bed to short bed conversion with pics

You can learn a lot about a person by their preference of truck bed.

    AGM battery?

I have had an AGM battery for a couple of years now. I also replaced the alternator when I replaced the battery. Barring one freak incident where the battery lost 100% charge overnight (likely not the fault of the battery), it has had no issues. I only got the AGM because they said it was the...

    New tire Dilemma

I have Yokohama Geolandar G015 on my dually. Great tire, not really loud on the highway, with great off road traction. They have a 60k warranty, too I think. I got them on sale for only $144 each, so I got 7 of them (6 drives and the spare) The only problem is that they are definitely going...

    Tire PSI for hauling firewood

Check your lug nuts and make sure your brakes are 8n perfect working order. If your sidewalls are bulged with your load you need more air. If you reach the max psi getting them to stand up then you need less load. The most overloaded I ever had a truck was my gmt800 half ton with the 4.3 v6. I...

    TBI 454 Misfire

No block off plate yet. I only have the word of the first mechanic that the distributor itself was replaced. It did look pretty new when I was under the cap. Also, the stalling issue that I was originally having is gone, apparently from the dist. being replaced. If bumping the pressure a bit...

    TBI 454 Misfire

Took truck for freeway drive. Low power, backfired out of the throttle body a few times. Bumped up pressure at the regulator. Truck pulled the same 5% grade it needed wot to maintain 60 mph, with half throttle, overdrive with the converter locked, and accelerating. Still not perfect, noticed...

    TBI 454 Misfire

That is more work than I am willing to do. The fuel pump is new, I am going to assume the fuel pressure, at least to the throttle body is not the issue. Assuming the fuel pressure is not causing my problem, what is the next most likely cause? Could my ecu be fried causing intermittent issues?

    TBI 454 Misfire

I am not a mechanic I do not know the location/color of the wires. What wire do I check from the harness going to the pump? Where is the ground? How far into the sheathing do I have to stab the probe? I am very mechanically inclined, but about completely out of my element with electrical stuff.

Lets, for a moment, assume the fuel pump voltage and pressure are spot on. What would be the next step after that?

    TBI 454 Misfire

How do I check the fuel pump voltage? The junction block shows over 14 volts while running at all connections.

    TBI 454 Misfire

New Developments: The hard misfire is gone completely. The truck runs great at low throttle positions. It shifts sooner, and smoother than before. The revs don't hang up waiting for an upshift. I noticed the wiring connector for the water neck grounds had poor continuity, so I replaced them...

    TBI 454 Misfire

I pulled the boot, not the wire. I twisted the boot to release it from the plug. The steel clip that holds the lead to the plugs were so tight I had to use pliers to remove them after they pulled out of the boot. After rebuilding the TB the truck seemed to be running better, but that was just...

    TBI 454 Misfire

New Developments: Used truck all last week for work. Ran horribly on Monday and Tuesday, but ran great for most of Wednesday. Back to running like **** for Thursday/Friday. The intermittent nature of the problem makes this really difficult. Went to check spark plugs, and every single lead...

    TBI 454 Misfire

I was mistaken about the battery. It is a agm starting battery. New Developments: The issue is NOT caused by the: ICM TPS EGR The timing, at least at idle is stable. All the plugs are getting power when they need to. Unfortunately I cannot put the truck under load and check, it idles okay...

    TBI 454 Misfire

Interesting, I never knew that there was a difference. I thought deep cycle just meant it had more cca. That being said, it was a stock replacement and definitely not causing my issue.

    TBI 454 Misfire

All engine compartment grounds have been cleaned, replaced and I added extra just so that engine grounds will not be the issue. Are there grounds in the cab that are serviceable without destroying the dashboard? My headlights do take a couple of seconds to come on after pressing the switch and...

    TBI 454 Misfire

Thank you for mentioning that! I totally forgot, the original battery froze solid shortly after buying the truck, so I got a new deep cycle AGM battery and new alternator. The voltage has never been great, 14 volts cold with no load then drops to about 12-13 after warm, and less when the lights...

    TBI 454 Misfire

I just want to add that I am 27 grand into this truck. I have paid to fix it multiple times so if I come across as abrasive its just because this thing has crushed my spirit for 2 years.

    TBI 454 Misfire

The distrubutor itself was replaced, for that exact reason. PCV works well. Timing was supposedly set at 6 degrees with timing wire unplugged but I will verify soon. Knowing my luck and the way the shops hate this truck, I do not think a scan tool will do any good but I will check and see if...

    TBI 454 Misfire

No light show, but the engine was still kinda warm from earlier so I'll check again when its dead cold. Some more context for those interested: Bought truck 2 years ago. I put a new cap, rotor, plugs, wires and fuel filter when I first got the truck. Not because of any issues, but just as...
