They didn't elaborate beyond what was in my original post. That is 331 PPM of Hydrocarbons. The maximum allowed is 220 parts.

    The Stupid Engine Questions Thread

I just failed smog for the first time I can remember. 1994 K1500 / V8 331 PPM HC (220 allowed) This truck sits unused most of the time. I think it went about 5 or 6 weeks without being started just before needing to get the smog. Plugs/wires? Clean injectors? fuel additive? Ideas?

Grinding noise. Goes away in 4wd.

I have a terrible grinding noise going on in 2wd that completely goes away in 4wd. It sounds like something is trying to engage. '93 Chevy 4wd / 5 speed manual. I can't tell if the noise is from the xfer, driveline or front diffy. Is there some kind of typical problem of this nature? How can I...

Vacuum issues? Heater, A/C controls not working

I solved the mode actuator issue. It turns out that the linkage is missing a screw. I slid it back into place (still no screw) and worked the controls. The mode selection works great. Now if I can just figure a way to put some 12A refrigerant in the system, I'll enjoy the summer a little more. I...

Vacuum issues? Heater, A/C controls not working

I am now convinced that I need to get into the duct flaps. What's the best way into them? Glovebox? underneath? edit>> I do get the typical thump, thump sound after making changes in controls or shutting the engine down.

Vacuum issues? Heater, A/C controls not working

Since reading Ken's post, I've been looking for diagrams, etc. I found a few discussions about how the GMT400 went back and forth between vacuum and electric on the controls a few times during the '90's. It sounds like I have the typical warped duct flaps and faulty solenoid controllers. I...

Vacuum issues? Heater, A/C controls not working

Thanks, Ken. I'll look for something that resembles a vacuum reservoir on the passenger side. Hopefully, I can figure out where the vacuum line goes through the firewall and find a place to check it. Jon

Vacuum issues? Heater, A/C controls not working

I think I'm missing something on the vacuum line routing. The nipple was broken off of the Charcoal Canister and the line was dangling over the side of the engine. Rather than trying to find a way to fix the canister, I just flinched while paying the $85 for a new one. I ran the line straight...

    Fuel pump: diagnosis and change.

1994 Chevy p/u, 350cid, TBI I never really got this truck running quite as well as I suspect it should. I've only had it for about 10 months now. Lately, I'm suspecting a fuel pump. I've already chased all of the normal stuff (plugs, wires, cap/rotor, timing, TPS, fuel filter, etc.). It...

Stock radio - shipping cost only

I just successfully changed out the stereo in the 1993 K1500 (with a little help form the forum. Thanks, guys.) With the exception of the speakers, the old stuff worked well. It was AM/FM Cassette. If anyone needs any of the old parts, they're yours for shipping costs. If nobody wants this...

    Idle Air Control test

I followed the instructions for testing the IAC Valve. I found that the valve was open about 1/4 inch cold and seated hot. Does that sound about right?

    Upgrading to single din stereo...

I got the stereo in successfully Saturday. It was a lot easier than I expected. Changing out the rear speakers was the hardest part. I really don't think that the interior moldings were made to come out without breaking. I highly recommend spending the $10 on the adapter plug. Take the time to...

    Speedometer under registers

I couldn't read the sticker in the glove box. I decoded the VIN. It should be a 3.73 ratio. If I'm not mistaken, that's about as high-geared as they come. It's a mystery to me how it got this way.

Engine miss / rough running - Where to go next...

There's only 82k miles on it. Are you suggesting valves? It passed the smog test. They only show the specific results when it fails but the Nevada requirements for a 93 are kind of strict. I figured that would rule out rings and valves.

Engine miss / rough running - Where to go next...

1993 K1500, 5.7L, 5 sp manual, I've got a couple other threads going but the engine codes are cleared up. Apparently, 42 & 54 can both be caused by loose ground wires at the thermostat housing bolt. Thank you, Richard (someotherguy), for that. The codes are gone but the miss remains. The idle...

    Speedometer under registers

That's a scary thought. I still haven't shifted into 4x4. I once bought a Jeep that someone had replaced the rear axle in. The ratios didn't match up so it would roll 5 feet and bind up.

    Speedometer under registers

Thanks for the ideas. I have a habit of putting my phone in a holder by the rear view mirror. I use Waze all the time. The vehicle speed (GPS derived) is shown in the lower left corner. If the speed limit of the road I'm on is in their database, I also get little red marks showing that I'm over...

    Speedometer under registers

Tire size... checked that first thing. The tire size is exactly what's on the door tag. I'm getting a 25% correction factor. That is, Speedo reads 40, I'm going 50 according to the GPS. I haven't checked the odometer yet but I'm pretty sure that it's under-registering too. On my old '75...

    Sudden engine revs

... I cleaned the ground wires at the thermostat housing a couple days ago. I just now checked engine codes. It just repeats 1 & 2 so I guess all codes cleared up. Now I'm clueless on what may be causing the engine miss.

    Sudden engine revs

I have another thread going about this. I just got the truck a couple of weeks ago. It runs rather rough. It's real easy to stall. I need to feather the clutch. Aside from that, when it's up to speed, it's got a definite miss going. Nothing real extreme, just annoying. I've changed plugs...
