Don't go with the peanut port heads, use the vortecs. As long as your tune is good a little extra CR is nothing to be scared of imo. I believe my truck is at 9.6 CR, and I haven't had any issues with detonation on 91. I'm sorry to hear about your cam. Did you pick another one yet? I've...

Holy novel Batman. Lol The only thing I'll throw in here, 91 octane is fine with boost as long as you don't go crazy with it, and intercool it. W/M is good insurance though, nonetheless. E85 would be the best solution if you live in an area that has it. Good input though for sure.

The rear mount setup works fine for me, but if I were to do to all again I'd go front mount.

Have you seen LT on YouTube boosting a stock 8.1? Makes a **** load of torque on a stock bottom end, not reason the L29 can't do the same as long as your tuning is good.

OP, I see no reason not to throw a turbo on the stock engine. Turbo 496 would obviously be awesome, but you'll probably be quite happy with the 454 boosted. Flip the manifolds and put an s480 up front. Use plenty of fuel, intercool it, keep timing conservative.

    Bowtie Brody's Namesake 96 454

I vote 8.1 swap. As much as I like the gen 6 454, a 496 with cathedral port heads is damn hard to argue with.

Now this has me curious, I'm going to have to open my tune and see what it shows for 4lo. As far as I know everything functions correctly.

I doubt it's the cold.. could just be lifters though, which would be good to replace if you're in the top end. Oil analysis would also point you in a direction there, if it doesn't show excessive bearing metals I wouldn't worry too much.

This is definitely true, they're finicky to tune. 4l80 is king

I have not, but I'm going to have to look for it! Any idea what it made for torque? I'm going to guess it was way up there considering how the l19 makes torque.

What weight oil are you running? 35 hot idle is good imo. And I can't blame you for not wanting to get away from 285s, next set of tires I buy for mine will be at least 285s. Hx35 would be much too small for the 454. S475s aren't that expensive if you hunt around lol If you can weld, factory...

As long as tuning is good they'll handle some pretty good power! Richard Holdener needs to finish his big bang tests for the the l29. Last test I saw he was pretty well over 1000 HP on the stock bottom end. I've had mine to 15 psi with the s475. It feels ridiculously torquey

OR Your ring gap is probably nicely worn in for boost. Turbo her and leave it stock. Lol You guys see what Lawrence Tolman did with his stock 8.1? Over 800 HP and like 1150 ft lbs to the wheels.

    L31/6L80e

Yeah I've heard of a lot of failures from them as well. Sucks because it's giving the 6l80e a bad rap.

What does your oil pressure look like at hot idle? I'm sure a regear will help a ton too. I really don't understand why gm had the 3.73 as an option with a 454.

If wear metals look good on oil analysis, do a compression test to try and get an idea of how worn it is. If everything looks good I'd run it.
