    Running a heavier oil

I always throw in one quart of Delo 15w40 when I change the oil in my old '88 Chevy truck. The extra detergent in the diesel oil seems to help in keeping the lifters very quiet.

No idea what's wrong with my 1997 Chevy 2500HD

An injector with some of the right-sized rust particles might not be able to be cleaned that easily, and it might still have enough clearance to run well enough at idle. Solvents probably won't clean it out either. That happened to me once and I ended up replacing all of the injectors to fix it...

I think I have water in the fuel

A possible cause is moisture in the distributor as several have pointed out. I had a recent problem with my 1988 Chevy which had similar symptoms with idling etc. as you described. It turned out to be the Ignition Control Module connection inside the distributor. The module connectors outside...

95 small block - Sluggish acceleration - is it from ESC?

Sluggish get up and go, hard starting, and a reduced idle seems to point to a clogged fuel filter.

    Vortec 454 Oil Recommendations

I have been using Delo 400 LE SAE 15w-40 diesel oil in my 2000 Silverado 6.0L engine for a long time. It runs and idles smooth as glass with over 122k miles on the clock. It is warm year round where I live. I will stick with what works for me and call BS on the "clearance damage".

1994 Sierra 1500 stalled in road and won't start

I would check the coil first, since your truck is old enough and that is about the time they like to up and die.

    Ethanol vs Non-Ethanol Gas

Some people seem to like ethanol in their gas, but I avoid the stuff if e-free is available for all of my six trucks. One of the problems with ethanol is that it attracts moisture which settles down below the gasoline. This is not usually a problem when a truck gets used frequently, since the...

    1992 Cheyenne

That five speed stick improves the truck's value in my opinion, in spite of all the other defects. I like the truck and it definitely looks to be worth the trouble to fix it up.

    Timing

A follow-up report on my '88 Chevy truck 305 engine with the "time bomb grenade" in it: I figured it might be a good idea replace both the timing chain and the harmonic damper, since the mileage is about 140K. It turned out that the original timing chain was stretched quite a bit, so I...

    Fuel pump or transmission?

You mentioned that the problem seemed to go away with a full tank. It could easily be that short hose connected from the pump to the hat which 90lsx mentioned. That hose can get small cracks from old age and that lousy ethanol often used in today's gas. It then starts losing pressure...

    Timing

It has not been a bad idea for me. I did that timing adjustment for my truck more than ten years ago. It has gone an extra 60,000 plus miles that way with absolutely no timing changes or any extra slipping. I'm not worried at all about the inertia ring flying all over my engine compartment...

    Timing

12 degrees might not be advanced at all if the outer ring with the timing marks has slipped that much. I somewhat agree with your other points about it not being a good idea to let the problem go on as long as I have.

    Timing

If your problem is the old balancer (damper) rubber having already slipped, the best bet might be to just reset the timing back to the 12 degrees you had originally. I recall having the same problem and I did not bother disconnecting the EST wire. I think I just loosened the distributor and...

How to get a 5.0 to tow better

The type of tires on the truck can make a difference in gas mileage. I use BF Goodrich Commercial LT 245/75R16 M&S tires pumped up to 80 psi on my truck. Some people use softer tires on their trucks and I would expect that it would give them more rolling resistance.

How to get a 5.0 to tow better

I agree with you about not believing everything others claim, but I do occasionally check to see what sort of mileage the truck gets. Gas is pretty expensive in Hawaii. My 1988 Chevy 3/4 ton truck has just the basic standard cab w/8' bed. It has the torque converter lock up in the trans, so...

How to get a 5.0 to tow better

I have a Chevy truck with the 305 engine and it is no dog as many here say. Most of everything on it is stock and the truck has over 133,000 miles on it. It gets about 18 to 20 mpg depending on how hard I push it. I occasionally haul more than 2300 pound loads from the pier over 80 miles one...

88 Suburban 350 running badly, poor mileage. TBI rebuild time.

If the TBI fix does not solve the problem, maybe it could be an old coil starting to go bad.

    So I’m chasing a wobble....

One of your tires might have gotten some separation in one of the sidewall or tread plies from hitting a bad chuckhole. This could happen with even fairly new tires, especially if you had a heavy load when they hit something hard while going fast.

    Falls flat under acceleration

The old rubber on the vibration damper may have slipped so that the 0 degree reading on the damper is not really zero anymore after someone re-adjusted it. The engine might be able to correct the bad timing enough to make the truck run decently under normal driving, but it probably would fail...

    Has anyone have this happen?

The symptoms you described in the first post sound exactly the way my 1988 truck acted. I ended up replacing the pump, but I probably did not have to. It turned out that the short rubber fuel hose above the pump was cracked from reacting with the ethanol added to the gas. You mentioned being...

Helps. Can't get timing to cylinder 1 tdc on distributor

It is possible that the rubber on your damper has slipped, which throws the timing marks off. It happened to my truck and the symptom was an engine that sounded fine, but had no guts. Instead of buying a new damper, I just used a tachometer to adjust the distributor. You play with the...

    Random Missfire Issues

A coil beginning to going bad could make the truck act the way you described.
