    Flat Tappet or Roller Camshaft?

With the oil in use today I would never consider using a flat tappet cam. Roller only! The oil today just does not have enough of the correct additives to stand up to the abuse a flat tappet throws out. That is IMO why we are seeing so many cam failures with flat tappet. Ken

    A/C brackets for 5.3

I think one of the smaller pieces attaches to the back of the compressor. In any case I'd feel a lot better about a solid "billet" (hate that word) piece over a cast aluminum piece. My truck does not have anything on the back side of the compressor to help support it. It may have been tossed...

    A/C brackets for 5.3

I've been looking at different brackets to mount my stock A/C compressor onto the 5.3. I almost drove myself crazy looking and gave up! haha Looked again and found NiceCNC. It looked like well thought out stuff so inquired about brackets to also mount the alternator and PS pump. I got a...

    Ignitions modules

I'd have to look for sure but I have, I think, 3 GM (TBI) ignition modules and one or two aftermarket modules that I will no longer need. These were pulled from the treasure yard when I has having all my module trouble, which turned out to be an Accel coil problem. $50 for all plus the...

Moog VS Mevotech Price VS Quality

HMMMM Went back the the Advance site looking at part numbers. The Moog part #s start with K. The Advance "Driveworks" have the same part # but start with DW. Making a BIG assumption. The K numbers may be the Problem Solver??????? Who the heck knows. I heard too many stories about squeaky...

Moog VS Mevotech Price VS Quality

I'm looking at new ball joints and possibly bushings for my 90, C1500 2x4. I get a discount at my local Advance Auto/Carquest. Moog lower joints (full as I retail don't know my discount until the part is billed) are $81 I see good recommendations for Mevotech TTX joints. Retail $40 on amazon...

    R4 A/C compressor clutch size

Not that I can find. And from what I read the top mount is about the best way to go??? A plus of the top mount is you keep all the factory lines. I don't think there is any one best solution. Anything is going to be a compromise. Holly does make a cast aluminum mount but it's pricey. At...

    R4 A/C compressor clutch size

Schurkey & Erik & 1998 I have the accessory drive for the alternator and PS pump for the LS. So that could work. What I don't have is the mount for for the R4 compressor. Somebody modified a SBC mount to work, but to me it looks a little janky. The stock LS mounted compressor hits the...

    R4 A/C compressor clutch size

So ..... I'm looking at brackets to locate the stock R4 A/C compressor on my 90 truck with the LS swap. Many of the brackets state they will NOT work with a five inch clutch. MUST use a four inch clutch. My search skills suck but a look on the inter web reviled nothing to me about this...

1990 C1500 engine swap to an LS

WARNING...This will be a long drawn out deal. Only because I am slowly collecting parts and knowledge to do this swap. I'm an old carb and distributor guy and struggled like hell (and still struggle) with TB EFI. So far I've collected an 80K 5.3 out of an 03 something, that was taken to the...

    The Stupid Engine Questions Thread

Grounds are super important. Clean and tight. IMO it's not good enough to rely on the bolt threads. Clean the surface the ground is attached to, to bare metal. Maybe a coil that is flakey or ignition module. I assume you replaced the cap, rotor and wires??? ken

    Oil cooler plumbing and removal

I have to apologize for not being complete in my original post. This engine is due to be pulled and kicked to the side in a few weeks. It is being replaced by a 2003 LS. I just need it to make it that long. One of the lines is leaking at the hose crimp. I'm not going to spend any money on...

    Oil cooler plumbing and removal

Passive meaning that only "some" of the oil flows through the cooler. As opposed to full flow where 100% flows through the cooler under pressure. My want is to just remove the lines and plug the holes. My truck is a 2WD with a full size filter vertical. The engine will get pulled shortly...

    Oil cooler plumbing and removal

I guess i wasn't clear in my question. Is the oil cooler on a 1990, 5.7, 2WD, a full flow cooler? The filter hangs strait down. If it is then just removing the lines and plugging the ports is not possible. Correct? Thanks! Ken

    Oil cooler plumbing and removal

So one of the oil cooler lines on my 1990 5.7 has started leaking. My plan is to just remove the lines and plug the holes in the adapter. Would I be correct that the oil cooler is just a passive bypass? As in what ever happens to go through the cooler gets cooled? If that is so then just...

    Friggin fragile ignition systems...

L31MaxExpress said: I had so many issues in 30K with the LS coils that I removed them and put a distributor back in. Even the factory LS powered vans have near constant coil issues. Too much heat where they are located and they burn out...

    Friggin fragile ignition systems...

I was having an endless series of module failures. The previous owner had installed an Accel coil. Finially bought a junkyard coil and threw the Accel away and low and behold no more module failures. Along with the coil I brought home a distributor which was installed with the coil. In the...

    Friggin fragile ignition systems...

Backed the truck out of the shop yesterday and was letting it warm up a bit before taking a 70 mile jaunt. Walked out of the house 5 minutes later and it was not running. First thought was I blew ANOTHER ignition module. Pulled the cap to put my spare in and the center electrode was burnt...

    Starting an LS swap

Well my brain won't allow the green to stay. I like lime green.... just not on an engine block! I did see the ICT stuff but what I posted has me thinking I can make both sides match and be more 'attractive" than the factory mount on the left side. Save a little cash as a bonus. I do have an...

    Starting an LS swap

So I guess I'm starting my LS swap as I'm now the proud owner of an 03 (as near as I can determine) DBW with supposedly 80K mikes. I was told the engine was resealed by the kids in the local community college auto program. So I'm looking at AC compressor mounts and run across this seller on...
