There is a purple wire not connected at one end. I have reason to believe its connected to the ignition switch at the other end.

You're replacing more than battery cables I believe. I'm gonna say to figure that out is to get a test light, turn on the ignition and see what you have

Ok so like magimerlin said, the black&red small wire goes to the large end of the solenoid.. along with the large wire from the battery positive.

Then what would connect to the small terminal of the solenoid?

Whay connects to the small cable of the positive battery terminal?

The guy before me did a hacking on the wiring of this truck and I'm just trying to get all this straight before I am able to actually work on the truck again.

Purple wire goes to the small lug on the solenoid. .. did ypu run one from the battery + to the alternator stud on the alternator? If not that's where the smaller wire on the battery + terminal will go...

That may be the issue then. I had a terminal rip off one of the cables and I recrimped it onto the end of the black&red wire and attached that to the solenoid

I'm sure the OP got his wiring figured out a long time ago, but I thought I'd bring this back to life to answer the question in case someone else finds this in a search. On a 1988, (I don't know about any other other years) the large (2 ga) wire runs from the battery to the large post on the starter. The purple wire connects to the small post on the starter. There are no other connections at the starter. The red/black wire runs from the junction block down the back of the engine, past the starter where it joins up with the large (2 ga) wire and runs all the way back to the battery. The alternator charge wire runs from the alternator to the junction block. There is no charge wire from the alternator directly to the battery. Hope this helps someone.
