1990 k1500 upper control arm bushing sleeves

I'm replacing the front suspension components on my 1990 k1500. I bought a poly bushing kit last year. I ended up buying new upper control arms from mevotech but as it comes with rubber bushing I would like to use the poly bushings. I can't figure out how or even if you can remove the rubber from the metal sleeves, it appears to be crimped and one solid peice through the middle. Any way to get these sleeves off?

Heat them up with a propane torch and they will soften up. Do not get then too hot and start the rubber on fire. Once they soften up push the rubber and the inner sleeve out of the steel shell. Then remove the inner sleeve from the rubber. Clean the outer shell and the inner sleeve up and install the poly kit and you are GTG.

Yup. Propane torch.

No need for anything hotter, and move the torch around so you evenly heat the entire shell. The rubber will just about self-separate. The outer shells DO NOT get removed from the control arm.

'Course, first you gotta knock the end-caps off the bushings. A long punch from the opposite side, and whack it with a hammer. Clean-up the end-caps, you'll have to re-use 'em along with the inner sleeves, and the outer shells.

If this was me--and it was, on my '97 K2500--I don't see much point to deliberately destroying brand-new rubber bushings to install brand-new Poly bushings.

Don't get me wrong--I love Poly bushings. But I don't understand removing perfectly-good parts to substitute perfectly-good DIFFERENT parts.

I'd install the arms with the new rubber bushings, and worry about installing the Poly bushings in five or six years, when the rubber has deteriorated. Good time to verify the ball joint, too.

Sorry all for the hiatus. Project has been on a brief hold.. I did end up getting one of end caps off of one of them, I hit it with a flat head and it damn near cut the thing in half. Ended up using a ball joint separator and getting the cap off by wedging it between the sleeve and cap.

Unfortunately I already removed the outer shells from the control arm so I'll have to do some measuring when reinstalling.

I already felt bad about destroying perfectly good rubber bushings and in hindsight I probably would've just installed them and been done with it by now.

I'm basically doing a cab off restoration on the truck, so I've got all brand new suspension and steering going back on the truck.
