1997 K2500, lifted with 33” tires, 120k miles

today the roads were very wet, not slick though, had wicked trouble stopping even at slow speeds. Felt like the abs was releasing the brakes like I was on snow. Have never been able to have a panic stop on dry pavement or dirt. Need to solve this.

why would rainy conditions cause this issue, or make it worse?

all the pads and shoes have good material, and the rotors and drums are good shape. The system has never been serviced. Reviewed a few threads on that project, if that is what I need to do.

any ideas or suggestions for further diagnosis or next steps? Thanks

That’s my plan, stopped by two shops today, neither could scan the abs. This seems to come around in wet conditions, not slippery ones. Yesterday the brakes were very spongy, then the right rear started braking hard, today the front left was braking hard. Today was dry. Took it down a dirt road and did some power stops, then everything is feeling “normal”. Trying to chase down a scanner that will talk to it.

I bought a Foxwell NT630 Plus; It was cheaper than bringing it to a shop and was able to read the all the ABS codes and could perform an Autobleed on my 1999 Suburban.
However, I recall the 97's were all over the place with odd electrical differences from both 96's and 98's, so you may be rolling the dice on a scan/bleed tool.

Wouldn't hurt to inspect the wheel speed sensor cables for damaged insulation.

The LF speed sensor harness on my '97 was so far gone that the ABS was disabled, but a smaller break in the insulation could cause problems only when it got wet. Mine rubbed-through on the dust shield for the disc brake.

@Schurkey I’m going to check the wires tomorrow. since this happens when things are wet was leading me to suspect a faulty wire(s). Thanks for the reply

What age of truck are you using the Foxwell NT630 Plus on and what else does it do other than ABS and brake bleeding?

edit PS: A 1999 Suburban - as clearly stated.

still wet and raining here, the symptoms are still the same. Haven’t been able to get under it. Pulled the abs fuse, can at least stop it now. Stopped by another shop, he didn’t have a scanner to read the abs. It had not been setting off the dash light. May be ordering the Foxwell, going to call them to confirm my truck. Going to check ohms on the sensors, maybe pull each of them to check for moisture or debris on them.
