Ok guys just hear me out.
I really like the look of the OBS, mine is just awesome with it's 350 vortec, but gas prices are killing me.
Is it viable, posible, to engine swap an OBS with a 2.2 engine out of an S10? They both use the 4l60e as far as I know. Could the engine just bolt in?
I know I'm gonna get the old "If you want good gas mileage sell it" but it might be possible, right?

If you want "good" fuel economy from a GMT400, I'd put a 4.3 in it. I don't think it's a "drop and go" solution, but it would be less work to put a 4.3 in it since they were sold with them. I haven't driven a 4.3 GMT400, but I've driven several S10 Blazers with the 4.3 and its not horrible. Gas mileage isn't the best ever, but it might be compared to a 350 (and definitely a 454  ).

I really like the 4.3L in my red truck. It has plenty of power to get out of its' own way even with a 4L80E behind it, and before I had it tuned for 91 octane it was pretty economical. In stock configuration I would average over 20MPG if I did a decent amount of highway miles per tank.

I'd entirely expect that the 2.2 will have a different bellhousing bolt-pattern than the V-8 style you have now.

The 2.2 will be driving around with it's tongue hanging out 90% of the time. Not a condition that leads to improved fuel economy.

A 4.3 V-6 might cause an improvement, and be easier to install especially if you buy an entire donor truck. But at that point, you might as well buy a complete, running, driving truck and NOT swap engines.

I drive Dear Old Dad's '98 Monte Carlo in the summer. Save the pickups for errands that actually need them, or for winter use.

Not going to get much better mileage in one of these trucks than a Vortec 305 or 350. The 4.3L gets worse mileage from my exprerience with a couple of Astro vans years ago that I had with both a 4.3L and SBC swaps.

I had an 87 GMC Jimmy 4x4 with the 2.8L TBI years ago. It had a little more power than a 2.2L but was a useless lump of an engine in that S15. It was always tongue out as Shurkey mentioned and lucky to get 15 mpg on a good day. Good running small block fixed that truck too.

Even if you got better MPG, which is questionable. Return on investment is not worth it, IMO.
Also having a small 2.2L in that truck would be worse than putting a 2x4 under the gas pedal. I have seen that before. Vehicles need to have acceleration or they are a road block to traffic that is already moving.
