71 fleetside for inspiration. I wasnt a fan of this body style years ago. I preferred the mid 70s D150s and mid 70s tradesman customized vans with the customized $haggin palaces built in the back. However the earlier pickups, and A100 split windshield compact vans have really grown on me. I love that angled down body line that kicks up at the end.

I don't think many people were fans, that's why they are still cheap. :)

I got my new radiator in quicker than I expected, but it turned into a 3 day affair.

I wanted to figure out a "better" way to mount the radiator that didn't involve cutting it this time. Turned out that angling the radiator worked really well. I wouldn't have to do that if my intake pipe wasn't in the way, so if/when I re-route that, I can mount it flush.

I failed to consider that the BBM rad had a 1 3/4 outlet, so I had to redo my lower hose. I got this here metal flexy hose from Summit and it least so far it works really well without leaks and no more splices and joins.

The top hose is now short and almost straight. Perfect.

So, with the new 160 thermostat, new radiator, and new hoses, I filled it up with water and let it idle for 30 minutes. I got all the air out in about 2 minutes (it took a few heat cycles and some driving before). After 30 minutes it had only got up to 180. I have the fan set at 190 so it never even got hot enough to turn it on. Before it would get up to 195 pretty quickly and go back and forth between 200 and 195 because of the fan.

Back from a short drive, she's definitely running cooler. My intake temps are a lot higher now though, but I am not sure how much of that is the fan running less, how much is the 88F air temp, and how much of that is my unsealed front opening letting air bypass the radiator and intercooler.

BTW, I got my GPS speedometer thing hooked up. It's kinda jumpy with big changes in speed, but if you are just trying to keep it legal it works great.

I love it. Total work in progress. Looks like lots o money spent and well executed. Any plans on hooking up the original heater, or are you thinking more along the lines of a vintage air system? It is hot a$$ed Texas after all. They have nice compact street rod setups that tuck behind the dash.

I thought about it, but for now the heater is there for decorative purposes only, LOL.

The truck is basically a toy. If it's very cold or very hot, I can just drive something else. AC will probably happen at some point.

BTW, I'll get those radiator pics to you. I don't think you're going to want it, but it's yours if you do.

Poked around in the tune this evening. I'm dangerously unqualified, but whatever.

In the learn table I had data for the 6-13 PSI cell. I didn't think I had made that much boost yet. The scary thing is I had data in there for that row in the 900 rpm column. Yikes, that's kaboom territory. I haven't even given it 100% throttle yet. I kinda don't believe that the 5.3 can spool a 75 mm exhaust turbine at 900 rpm. I don't lug it when I drive it and I can't recall trying to climb a hill at 900 rpm.

Maybe I just need a bigger turbo. :)

I'm going to enable a boost cut and some warning lights on the "dash".

Above my pay grade for sure, but it reminds me of the dude that boneyard turbo'd his SBC. We all told him he was fcking up but he persevered until he came back asking why his oil was milkshake. At least you realize there's a potential for issues here. :) He was immune to the suggestion.

Oh look, I found the quote and a pic of his setup: "Yeah well looks like I'm changing engines anyways because this one just made a milkshake for no reason."

Hey; I'm probably being unfair/unkind to the dude. Hot rodding is all about experimenting and trying things, even things that others might tell you are dumb. He was out there. But he was also digging broken pistons out of the engines and making milkshake oil, so, there's that. His thread is on here, it's from 2017 or so? He hasn't been active since 2021.

Finally got around to messing with the shocks. I had them on the softest settings for compression and rebound. Had that old Cadillac float to it.

Went up 8 clicks on compression and 2 clicks on rebound and I would call it a big improvement. Think I'll keep adding compression dampening to it until I don't like it. I'm leaving rebound soft for better weight transfer.
