I know there are better options out there but I have a nearly-new JVC 10.1 KW-Z1000W that I kept from my RAM before I sold it. It’s just sitting in the box waiting for a home.

I‘m planning on putting a double-DIN stereo in my ‘95 but I’m cringing at the thought of having to permanently cut the dash. Flashback to yesterday and it dawned on me that the protrusion that holds the screen on this JVC is actually quite small compared to the size of the double-DIN “box” it’s mounted to.

I’m wondering if I couldn’t mount the unit a bit deeper into the dash and just let the un-cut dash opening cover its perimeter while still allowing the big screen to float out in front of it?

Certainly I could hit the garage and start test-fitting, but I figured I might be able to save myself a bit of time by asking the question here first in case one of you has already done it.

Thanks

In my experience in doing two GMT400 double DIN installs, it is the circled area that will require clearancing/cutting the dash. I’m having a hard time seeing how mounting “deeper” would avoid cutting, unless you are talking about a different part of the dash.

I was able to avoid cutting by installing receivers that were non-CD/DVD models so they didn’t need as much room.

I wasn’t very clear. I’m not so concerned about cutting behind the dash. My concern is regarding the cover that we all look at while we drive.

I used one of these style bezels to mount my double din. Worked fine but like previously stated, some cutting inside the dash is needed. I think trying to mount it further back like u said wouldn't be worth the hassle.

You can always float the Alpine ILX-F509.... it uses a single din mounting and it allows you to float the 9" screen in front of the dash bezel.

Yeah… problem is that I’m really looking for a home for the stereo that I already own. I also have a nice Kenwood DD, but that would certainly require cutting. I go through cars like others go through cell phones. I’ve kept the stereos from the last few I’ve disposed of. No need to buy yet another.

There is a new dash bezel overlay on Amazon for double DD install, $98 . That's an idea. I'd like a double DD in my Tahoe, but " no cutta da dash!" .
I’ve seen the replacement dash bezel but the reviews are all over the map. Some say it fits great and others say the fit is horrible. Who to believe?

It's a tough call. At times I think, as long as they drop a piano on it, I can use my plastic model skills, or aviation tricks to get good fit. I can imagine some of these people work like everything will fit with a hammer. Or they treat stuff like a 800 pound gorilla.
I'm with you on the " should I, or shouldn't I" . And yeah stuff has arrived broken. But Amazon made it good, so kinda stupid to get twisted about.
So I am filling a parts box to do the double D's in the 98 4 Dr Tahoe. Once I get it together that's a Saturday filled.
Good luck, send us photos to " ooh and ahh " over.

Just buy a second bezel?

I cut a mint Escalade bezel for mine, and I’m about to paint it, so you ain’t gonna get any static from me.
