Got the exhaust all done last week, turned out well. I ended up having an issue with what I thought was ignition related, ended up being two things. 1, I forgot to tighten the intake boot on the throttle body so the hose would come loose and mess with the MAF, and also the distributor cap button was almost completely gone! Robbed the one from my plow truck and it runs much better. Also cleaned it up!

Well I guess it's bee a while since I have posted here. Not much new besides it's been partially retired as a hauler until I decide what to do with the engine. It's getting tired and has a weird compression issue on one cylinder. It drives ok, but I now have a 2006 2500HD to haul trailers with. Oh, also got sick of the spool and popped an open center section back in.

I've been using the 2500 for parts hauling lately since I have a plow on my 2500hd and I don't feel like taking it on and off, plus this one has more ground clearance for instances like this. Hard to see but there are some ruts over a foot deep. Also ran into this poor truck, been sitting so long a tree is growing up through it!

So I can't remember if I had mentioned this before but about 2 years ago I randomly lost a little clutch fluid which caused the pedal to be a bit spongy. I found the fluid level to be a little low, topped it off and it was fine for a while. Several months later it happened again. I looked all over and couldn't find any fluid leaking so I assumed it was the slave/TOB. It did it once again a month ago, and finally realized it had to do with cold temperatures. Some rubber seal must be shrinking when it is cold enough out to let fluid pass by. I kind of forgot about it until yesterday, went to drive the truck after a cold stretch where we had wind chills below -20, and I had 0 pedal. I checked the reservoir and it was empty, even the line. This time I could see the fluid dripping from inside the bellhousing area. I filled it back up and still had nothing, ended up having to bleed the system to get the pedal back. I decided it is finally time to do the engine upgrade since I should replace that sooner than later. As a temporary fix I bought some of the "universal" stop leak and ran that through, hoping maybe it will condition the seal to keep it working until I am ready to pull the engine. Seems to work but is a little thicker than brake fluid so the pedal feels a little sluggish but I can deal with that. I was originally trying to decide if I wanted to rebuild the 454 in it, find another big block, or LS swap. Ultimately I decided I will be rebuilding this one to keep costs reasonable since I know the lower end is good. The plan is to keep it more towing oriented, keeping the factory heads but upgrading the cam/lifters, and also going to a dual plane intake and carb. I want to keep the compression fairly close to stock so I can continue to use 87 octane fuel. I spent the afternoon watching videos and researching parts to decide what I wanted to order. It does have low compression so I do plan on completely dissassembling and as long as the cylinder walls look good I will just do a dingleball hone and replace the rings. Hoping to get started on this in a couple of weeks, I want to wait until I have all of the major parts on hand. Either way I will need to get a valve job done on the heads because I think thats where some of my issues are coming from as well.

Started the engine overhaul process today. I got it pulled and completely dissassembled, the only thing still in is the crank which I don't have a reason to pull. I discovered a random bent pushrod in the lifter valley, must have been some sort of issue before I bought it and they didn't feel like taking it apart to get it out. I also found 2 cylinders with broken piston rings, which might explain some of the low compression. The biggest pain of the whole job ended up being one stubborn head bolt that was so badly rusted that I ended up torching the head of the bolt off to remove the head. They are supposed to be 13mm or ½", but I ended up pounding a 12mm socket on 7 or 8 of them to break them loose. The stubborn one was somewhere between 10 and 11mm and wouldnt let anything grab tight enough to break loose.
