Okay so I have a question. I have a 98 z71 5.7 4l60e/3.73 gears. So my rear diff has starting making noises but is my daily. I’ve tried finding a rear end to no avail, but, I found a 3/4 rear end with 8 lug. I have never worked on a rear end besides fluids so I’m out of my element. Can I take my axle shafts from my 3.73 and put them in the 3/4ton differential. From what I’ve read the 3/4 is a tad longer to accommodate the bigger breaks but put my backing plates and breaks on theoretically should fit just figured id ask.

I assume you have an 8 lug semi float; if it is a full float axle this is all a moot point, they are not the same at all. In order for them to interchange, they both need to be the 14 bolt (sf) AND the 3/4 ton needs to be from a 4x4, as 2wd and 4x4 axles are slightly different lengths. Even if all of that is true, I'm not 100% on interchangeability, but I'm thinking they will likely swap. Also if it does work I'd just keep the bigger brakes if they clear your wheels

Somewhere I read, could have been on Pirate or CK5, that you can take the shafts from a 6 lug 14sf, and install them in an 8 lug sf. I have no desire to run either, but I'll see if I can find it....

He's got a Z71 with a '60E. Almost certainly a 1/2-ton, therefore almost certainly a crappy 8.5" rear axle.

I think he wants to put axle shafts and crappy 254mm leading/trailing drum backing plates from an 8.5" axle, into a 9.5" or maybe even a 10.5" axle.

That's not going to work very well.

If the 8.5 is so bad what’s a better 3.73 six lug rear end. As I stated above I have little knowledge of differentials.

The 9.5" ring gear, 14-bolt back cover, semi-float 6-lug axle from a "Light" 3/4 ton/2500 is a drop in replacement except for the conversion U-joint needed. You'll also need new U-bolts/nuts, and the mounting plates from the axle-donor truck.

Enormously stronger, and equipped with bigger/better brakes. Two upgrades in one. The 3.73 ratio is most common, I looked for two years to get a G80 in a 3.42 ratio for my '88.
