The bulb area can absolutely be opened - can't recall if the lens just twists off or if it's glued; pretty sure it twists off as I replaced the bulb in one of mine with an LED and put the lens back on - don't recall having to do any special tricks to make it happen.

I was not clear. The bulb cover does twist off to allow changing the light bulb. However, I was referring to reaching the internals under the bulb. It appears the flat back that the magnet attaches to snaps in place, and I cannot get it open, yet.

I identified 4 OBSs that had the firewall reel light. On the three that were intact enough to tell, they also had a seperate underhood lights.

ALL WERE 1996.

There are two separate connectors coming from the main harness to each light in those 96s.

Also, 3 of the 4 had the underhood box. SCORE!!!

Is there an RPO code for these lights?
Is there an RPO code for the boxes?

I got three of the vins if anyone can cross reference...
2GTEC19R6T1519657 light and box
1GCEC19M7TE234720 light only
1GNEK13R2TJ365088 light and box

Very interesting! Thanks for the update; IIRC the Burb I saw that had the light on the firewall was a '96. Maybe they were using up supplies of parts from the TBI era?
I checked the VIN reports I got from Caman96 and 1ton-o-fun, and they don't show any codes for the box or the reel light. My crew cab was built in September '96, and I remember reading something that was posted/linked on here somewhere, that said that the one tons came from the factory with the underhood storage box. Maybe just the crew cabs? The truck has a box which appears to be original...but no reel light although there are dimples on the firewall where it could be mounted.

Ive got a 96 Silverado with Reel light, Hood light and storage box and I’ve never noticed an RPO specific to any of that, other than certain packages that don’t really specify. Was wondering though, if you got a Camper’s Package, you’d obviously get that RPO, but were any made without Storage box/duel battery?

My '97 has the underhood light(the one actually bolted to the hood) and the storage box. No reel light though. It's a Silverado trim group, so does that or the equivalent LT Suburban top tier trim level get you the hood light? Or do they all have that standard?

Just a reminder that the firewall light is a different design than the TBI era light... same light design but with much larger mounting tabs.

THe lights were offset from the dimples.

I cannot check at this moment, but can someone review the 1996 wiring diagram and see where power comes from for each light? are they both constant on, etc.

That's interesting that they're different; the pix I've seen, it looks like the same piece. Do you have pictures of the differences or the different part numbers? Not saying that you're wrong, just want to know for sure. All the ones I have are the early style from TBI trucks.
