Hi all, I need a vin for a stock computer cloning for a 96 7.4 5spd with 373 gears, my truck, an NV4500 has the 513's in it and I simply dont need them (7 mpg is also killing me.), but I love all of the rest of the heavy duty suspension. I have a set of 373 posi gears to put in it, and have confirmed by the case numbers that they will interchange, so now I need a vin so that I can have a computer cloned If you have one and are not afraid to share it please do so, thanks.

Is that a 3500HD? I'm no gear expert but 3.73s might be a bit tall for that heavy of a truck.

Idk man. Some states read computer vins for inspection purposes. It might not be required for you but could create a problem for somebody else giving up their vin.

I thought on odb2 gear changes could be tuned/reprogrammed? Maybe one of the tuners will post up.

Asking for a vin has red flags written all over it.

X2, seems like it would be easier (maybe cheaper) to just have your existing PCM tuned for the gear change. The '96-'97 PCMs are a little more difficult to get tuned than the '98+, but they're supported by JET DST and it can be done. I know Black Bear Performance can do it, they tuned my red '97.

I'm not sure exactly what he's doing either. Here in MI, he could be running his truck with a Commodore 64 and no one would care.... or look. It could be he's trying to get a base file that has his desired gear as an option? The HD never came with a 3.73 gear, or even a 4.10.

Usually when I've seen people ask for VINs it's becasue they have a donor engine (commercial diesel) from a vehicle and the dealer ship won't talk to them unless they get a VIN.

Don't need a VIN to get it flashed. Get a new computer and flash your VIN that computer, with the 3.73 and whatever else want done. Since gonna be in there, might as well tune it....

For getting stock config from GM, need a vin that would use that config. In that case, I have had success searching part outs to get a vin for reference. But as mentioned above, should be able to get adjustments done without needing another vin

Yes, it’s a 3500hd, if the gears are too tall, I simply don’t have to put it in 5th, (maybe at 75 mph) and at the moment, with the 513’s, I can take off in 2 no problem. Lots of 4 door dually’s weigh the same, and they have 737 gears. I have a spare rearend, I can always swap it back.

Well, it’s for more than one truck, I have two others that I want to convert from autosplatics to 5 speed, want to stay stock, and the 1996 vortec 7.4, 5 speed, and 373 is the setup I want to go with, I just haven’t found a truck with that combo, so I need a vin to get an ecm cloned.

I'm not too sure you're going to easily find that combo from factory original, even on a 2500. I'd imagine most were 4.10's. You could certainly get a 2500 from factory in 1996 with the L29, MW3, and GT4 - I'd guess there's some out there, I've just never seen one. That combo isn't shown as available in any other model, especially 3500's where 4.10's are minimum regardless of engine choice.
