PS. On 95 and earlier trucks mine 350/ 5.7, if you install factory hd alternator, needs 1 inch longer belt and factory added three support rods on back for larger case, check a parts source with good factory illustration, you'll see.
Ok. That what I was wondering as well. Any different size pulley needed? (Smaller / larger) ? I need to look at these support rods also. And the links @df2x4 posted .

I found a few 2007-2010 police tahoes with the 160 high output. Only concern is reliability; as they stay running pretty much 90% of time. Is that just chance that the windings are still good or should i steer clear of them so to speak and look for a non police model
like i said twice before, newer chevy alternators will not work on these trucks unless they have the 4 pin oval plug. the 2 pin oval plug will not work even if you de-pin re-pin or whatever. our pcm does not support a 2 pin regulator. newer chevys have pcm controlled alternators for variable charging voltage

I thought all cs130 & 244ad alternator were roughly same size cases

also i cant really afford mechman / dc power.. i only have a budget of 200-250.
they are, but you should look for a CS130D or a AD230 or AD244 / CS144 instead of an overclocked cs130. juiced CS130 have a problem with cooling an already un-ideal design rectifier

some of those newest ones may not even be delphi/denso design alts, so one has to be careful. bosch and other manufacturers started to fill GMs supply when things got dicey for delphi and the designs are just different

The WAI alternator is the same as the NAPA HO alternators when looking at the specs on NAPA it says manufactured by WAI and NAPA offers a lifetime warranty on them but charges like double compared to Rock Auto.

Rock Auto also has a WAI High output CS130 a little better than the 130D, and a ad244 which would be best. Both these alternators have the oval plug. Your CS130d will have a square plug.
cs130D has an improvement over the CS130. (Cs130d has no external fan, and the plug is the oval like the AD series)

The plug for CS130 is the oddshaped rectangular which has a large wire on one end that keys the connector one direction. wiring order and function is the same tho ;)

just be careful you do not get an alternator with this style plug
You must be registered for see images attach

the first plug is for PCM controlled GM alternators. there is no way to make it work on our trucks.
a PWM controller can be used, but thats a lot of complexity for someone who wants to just get an alternator and have it "work"

Works fine on my 8.1L powered 99 Tahoe, the 0411 controls it. I have the 4 pin also PCM controlled in my 97 Express.

If you have a need for more than the factory AD244 output, they are easily upgraded to 200a without using a 2nd or external rectifier. Keep in mind the AD244 has about double the idle amperage of a CS130D and 145A to start with.

I have built a few of the AD244s to 200a and if you have some basic mechanical knowledge of an alternator it is not hard or even time consuming to do.

My local Pick & Pull gets like $25 for an alternator. A little cleaning, an upgrade kit and for under ~$150 one can have a really nice 200a alternator. If you need more idle/low speed amps and are not spinning the engine to the moon, alternator overdrive pulleys are cheap too. I have also put the smaller diameter, clutch style pulley on them. The clutch pulley is about $45 from several alternator parts suppliers. It prevents the alternator from over reving or the belt from slipping on rapid rpm transitions.

My thoughts on some Ex police stuff, yes you could say they are " ridden hard " . The other side of that coin is they are serviced and maintained under severe hd service guideline. And yes all is never perfect but that is the process for warranty support.
And Mr. Kran , in no way would I ever advise or recommend or suggest installing a part that was not compatible or a suitable upgrade or replacement. That was not a blanket statement that any alternator regardless of year would be compatible. It was to show that chopping up wiring is not always the best course.
Everybody is free to make there own choices, good or bad. Good luck.:gmfs:
