I just bought this truck and went to change the oil. When I got the oil filter off I instantly realized it is much smaller diameter and length than the filter that my truck was suppose to take. It appears to have an oil filter adaptor installed on it. Couple of questions: why would someone install on of these? Is there a benefit to having one? What filter number do I run with this adaptor? The filter that came off of it is a Wal-Mart Tire and Lube filter. When I google the filter number that came off the truck it appears to be a filter for a bunch of different V6 engines. I didn't see where it was used on a V8. I would think the filtering capacity is greatly reduced with this smaller filter. Should I leave the adaptor on or attempt to remove it? I have attached some photos. Thanks everyone for the help.

The black filter is for a 2wd. Not gonna fit a small block 4x4.
The orange one is, well, a short alternative to the OE filter. While its technically wrong, it will work in a pinch.
The Fram part number is ph3980 and any equivalent manufacturer can interchange. I prefer Purolator L24011 myself

Just FYI, that system is prone to leaking. I deleted mine because of this. Very easy. Get an oil filter adapter for a 350 from the early 70s and use a wix 57099 filter or equivalent brand you prefer. Just my two cents! :)

My friend who does QA for Mann/Wix says the smaller filters have better media. The only advantage to the larger filters is that they'll hold more garbage. If you change your oil regularly, the smaller filters are preferred.

If you change your oil soon I’d like to see this. My adapter is leaking and it would be nice to delete it.

Do you have any clue the part or years I could search for this?

Melling MFA350 oil filter adapter
ACDelco PF454 oil filter

You will also need to buy two 5/16"-18 x 1 1/4" bolts to install it. No gasket required. If you read the Amazon reviews, you'll get all the info you need.

@JS45 - See this thread, in particular this post.

I assume this will delete the oil cooler? Does the oil cooler actually cool? I’ve read multiple posts saying it warms the oil/keeps temps more stable.
