When swapping clusters or odometers, pay attention to the plastic casing for the drive shaft. Mine had come loose after a cluster swap and not allowing gears to make good contact. Shout out to @someotherguy for hooking me up with one to get it going tho!!

i did set mine to Zero just bc while i had it out. At least got soem spare numbers now.

If you try to turn them backwards, silver lines will appear between them as a "tell-tale" the mileage has been altered.

Richard
yes, i understand turning the numbers backwards will show silver lines... but does tuning it forward in number sequence also show silver lines?

can you tell me the proper way to dial in a specific number reading as i want to match my replacement cluster to the proper mileage or is it better that I just swap the odometer dial assembly? Is reorganizing the gears like OP said easy? Wondering if it is a really technical task or something I can take apart and do with ease.

It aint easy.. whenever possible swap the whole odometer asssembly. As drive shafts may be different betweeen odometer & trip . Some utilize a spring and otherd utilize a rubber coupling.

I only did this bc i was replacing odometer motor already & my numbers were not turning properly. And the drive shaft was different betwewn the two.

U gota work in a small box & be prepared to drop a gear or two, therr TINY. Dont do it if u can keep from it

ok, i'll be trying to swap the whole odometer assembly first. I am going to pull the original odometer assembly with original mileage from my cluster and try to swap it into my replacement cluster. hope it will be a 1-for-1 swap.

as Long as u take out the odometer, & trip all in one its a direct swap. most problems lie whenever u swap one or the other, the coupling doesnt mate up. I had problems one time with motor gear not lining upmwith odometer gear, but i didnt have it seated properly. Its pretty easy to do that.

Moving the whole assembly from one cluster to another is cake. I mean literally there's nothing to it other than a few screws and a single cable connection for the motor. So, don't sweat it.

hmm hold up a minute, I failed to mention that my trip meter is the reason I want to swap clusters. My trip meter doesn't reset when I push the plunger, soo.. I found a replacement cluster with an operable trip meter but I am trying to figure out the best way to have the correct odometer reading. I'm open to any options that will help me achieve this with the parts I have. btw both clusters i have are the 'rare' 1991 needle clusters
