well i put in the 160 thermostat... and sure enough now it wont get over 140... before with the 195 in it, it would run 210-215 pretty much all the time... so question. should i try maybe a 180? and is running at 130-140 way too cold? will it damage anything or just suck fuel?

How are you checking the temperature? If you're just using the factory gauge it could be off.

Just put a new stock 195 in it. That's what they are designed to run best with. Your old one might have been sticking closed a bit. Either way, that seems like pretty normal operating temp to me.

the 160 will not let the engine get warm enough to burn condesation out of the oil, and will hurt your fuel mileage, buy a brand name 195 as i have had a bunch of defective t stats as of late

Ok so its time to replace the fan clutch... when i was getting one they asked me what my gear ratio was. two questions

1. Why does that matter?
2. Since im running bigger tires should i get one for a higher gear ratio?
This thread got way off base. I’d really like to know peoples thoughts on the question though. I’ve been given a fan clutch twice that never seems to shut off. I’m need to order a new one but I don’t want to order the wrong one.

What ambient temp are you running in? When it is 90-100*F or more outside mine rarely shuts off. There are times when I hear it kicked in and roaring at 75 mph climbing a long-sustained grade. In stop and go or around town you will hear it the whole time the engine is running and up to temp. It couples the fan whenever additional cooling is needed like it is supposed to.

In my P-30 chassis RV the clutch fan can be heard briefly at first start up (cold) for perhaps 30 seconds to a minute. Then only again after engine reaches operating temp and when pulling from a stop for a short bit then disengaged. The big roar is when pulling grade/s. You want the 195 t-stat. Cooler one will call the ECM to add fuel.

I ended up getting a Hayden 2734 (Link below) and installing it with an 11 blade fan yesterday. It does seem a little better but still seems to stay on quite a bit (Texas 80-100 deg all the time). I'll get some drive time in and update. The clarify, it does turn off but my observations in the past is that it is on quite a bit. I just don't seem to remember hearing it run hardly ever years back and never had cooling issues.

Not sure where you guys come up with the 195°F stat thing. I run 170°F stats because the knock retard is not turned on until ~165°F in most GM setups. Fuel enrichment ends and closed loop happens in the 120-140°F range. Thermostat temp does not change how quickly the engine gets from cold start to 160-170°F. On a 40°F cold start, in under a minute my L31 was in closed loop using short term fuel trims, same for the 383. Long terms are enabled at 133°F.
