What would be a reasonable price to pay when the time comes to get my 97 Suburban's 4l60e rebuilt?
It's a 2wd burb. I would bring the trans to the shop myself plus install the trans myself once rebuilt.

Most reputable transmission shops won't do take-out transmissions because too many of their customers dork up the install and then try to blame the shop for a bad rebuild.

I bought the parts to rebuild and upgrade my 4L60 for about $800. If it was just a straight rebuild, it would be about $500 in parts and a pretty hefty amount of labor. I think anything under $2000 would be suspiciously cheap, and anything over $3000 is expensive.

If you want a drop-in replacement, Summit sells a rebuild for $1600 while B&M and TCI sell theirs for about $3000.

For what it's worth, rebuilding an automatic transmission is a skill. Skills can be learned and refined. If you have the luxury of this not being your only driver and you have good mechanical skills, why not give it a go yourself? Every expert transmission rebuilder rebuilt his first transmission at some time in the past. The money you save is sufficient reason to give it a try. Here is a video that details every step of the process. He is fast-moving, so I have had to back up and re-watch segments several times, but he is also very thorough and calls out part names and trouble spots along the way. I watched this video while rebuilding my first 4L60e. That truck is still functioning.

I paid $2800 for a rebuild last February. That's with a HD master rebuild kit, Corvette servos, a shift kit, and a new torque converter. They flushed through my lines, and trans cooler. I drove the truck there with no reverse or OD. It took them about 2 weeks to do the work. This was with a 2 year, 24,000 mile warranty.

I was told that the transmission that I got in my 94 was rebuilt. I find this questionable, but it's an okay transmission. I was quoted around $3,000 for a rebuild, so I found a used one out of a 94 K1500 single cab short bed (My truck, without 305k miles). It's almost always gonna be cheaper to do it yourself, but a shop can do it for extra money.
