How do you wire the AC to wire without the ECM? I have a 98 7.4 with Holley Terminator and I can't get my AC to work correctly as it is now. The ECM just commands the compressor to stay on and not cycle. I don't think most the ECM is connected to anything anymore.

I have about 400 miles on my 97 Suburban with Cummins 5.9. It's my 2nd swapping, the first being another 97. I've stripped the ecm down to 23 pins being used. The ecm was originally 120 pins with some not having been used. I'm sure you could strip all of it out, as my son did on his 93 S10 5.9 swap.
I wanted to keep some functions though that need the ecm. Cruise control, speed sensitive steering, IP panel...gauges
I did unknowingly strip out the crank position sensor and that left me with non-functioning AC. I considered rewiring that back in but opted to rewire the AC circuitry to not use the ecm for AC control.
If you decide to keep the ecm for some of the luxuries I'll guide you with any help I can.
I'd rather just toss the entire ecm if possible. I've never owned a truck with AC so getting that fixed is far from my top priority, as well as the fact that it's now almost October so I have all winter to figure out how to make the ac work. Cruise I don't care about either, to be honest I'm not very fond of cruise control anyway, never used it on stuff that was equipped with it. But first and foremost I need a running driving truck. I just started working on it so I don't know totally what's been done yet, I still need to find the connectors for the gauge senders and separate them from the rest of the engine harness, and then I guess just start ripping at anything ecm related. As long as I can have a fully functional gauge cluster. I'm fine with having to use the Dakota digital box for the speedo and/or tach. From what I've gathered the ecm does not control any of the gauges on the 96 diesel trucks, is that correct?

I run my tach off the alternator without the Dakota box. I have a Dakota box but don't use it. My tach isn't "spot on" but it's close enough. At engine rpm's at 1000 the tach reads 100-125 slow. At 2000 its within 50 or so and at 2500 the tach reads 150 or so fast. Close enough for me. I'd rather it read fast than slow anyway.
Speedo still runs off t-case. I took the speed sensor out of the GM tail housing and put it in the Dodge 241dhd t-case. Works fine.

Awesome, I knew the vss read from the case but I wasn't sure if it was routed thru the ecm to the gauge or not. I'm gonna start on the wiring right now and see how far I can get

Don't need anything for the speedo. I converted a 98 diesel to gas and it still had the external VSS buffer like the TBI trucks.

Post. Link to the thread if you don't mind, seeing as I'll be in the same boat after I finish ripping my ecm out

You don't need the ECM for cruise control.

GM cruise control boxes are easy to wire up, they just need basic inputs to function properly.

I use boxes off of late 90s early 2000s S10 stuff all the time in my drive by cable LS swaps.

The diesels are different. I want to say the engine harness plugged into it as opposed to the gassers where a firewall harness plugs into it.

Yessir, diesel is dbw instead of dbc so the cruise was part of the computer as opposed to an external unit that pulled the throttle independently
