Stripped oil pan threads... Would rather install some kind of ball valve anyway.

Oil pan drain threads are boogered up and I am not too keen on dropping the pan right now. I have always thought it would be handy to have a ball valve for draining the oil anyway... maybe something I could attach a hose to when draining, then maybe safety wire the valve closed. Since I have to tap the threads anyway this is a good opportunity.
Has anyone done anything like this?

My older Craftsmen riding mower had something like that on its Briggs. It nearly cost me that engine. There is alot of stress over time on a heavy part dangling off the oil pan by its threads. It ended up pulling the aluminum threads on the block. I had to tap the block for an oversize plug. When it went luckily it dumped oil on the muffler and created a smoke show alerting me to shut it down but did not catch fire.

Some people hate them, but I would use an oversize piggy back plug and thread locker on the threads where it goes into the pan.

There's just too many scenarios where a drain plug protruding out the lowest part of a vehicle (or maybe close to). I like a to simply stick a suction hose down the dipstick tube, then refill it. If I want to replace the filter, it's not a rain forest shower when dropping the pan :waytogo:

I’ve seen this advertised on one of the car shows / info-mercials on Motor Trend TV. Seems like a good idea in theory at least.

They make a thread repair unit. Or you could re-thread it lager or a different thread. Parts store should have it.

I have a Fumoto valve like @tayto linked above on my Duramax. Makes oil changes a breeze. You can attach a hose right on the nipple and run it to your drain pan then just flip the lever. Don't lose the little black retainer clip. They're over $10 each I think.

If you go off-road a lot I probably wouldn't run one because you "could" catch it on something but my truck is 99% on road use so no worries.
