1st gen RX-7s for me. They are to RX-7s what GMT400s are to Chevy trucks - the last gasp of simplicity. I can totally geek out and rant rotary engine/RX-7 stuff for hours on end. 13Bs are great, but a properly built 12A will rev to the moon. Mine hit 10,000 rpm on several occasions.
The styling of the first gen ones wasn't as attractive to me. My first encounter with a rotary was street racing in SoCal in the late 80's, a 13B swapped RX-2 coupe wiped the floor with the 5.0 mustang I was in, repeatedly.
Never had any direct experience with a 12A, but I don't doubt you.

Monte Carlo's (have owned at least one of every generation except for a 1st gen)
GMT 400's (of course)

Wasn't a rocket ship, wasn't fancy but it was a blast to drive and extremely reliable and even did well in the snow. Owned 4 Vee Dubs of this body style that were just straight up cheap transportation but this GTi has always stuck with me.

Took the front bumper off tonight, found exactly what I was expecting. No damage to the core support, or bumper guides on the fenders. So I just need a hood, headlight, grille, and lower valance to get it on the road body wise. Also need to replace the PCV hoses(oil leak) and a couple other things. But I have a list going.

I always liked the TV and they did for these, with what was supposed to sound like the German Beach Boys, singing" Kleinen GTI" to the tune of "Little GTO". These cars made the VW reputation on their water cooled models.

I've owned a couple of Jettas. Had a 16v that was a lot of fun to drive. I always wanted something with a VR6 preferably a Corrado, but never worked out.

Oh snap... yeah, went back to a schnitzel mobile. I got a really good deal on what I thought was a 2.0L non-turbo when I saw the add for the car(only had exterior pictures), never asked just assumed but got there to pick the car up and bam 1.8T under the hood with a 2" stack of maintenance records dating back to 2010, with timing/water pump being done 36k ago.

The car itself is a 2001 Jetta GLS, in Baltic Green with Tan interior. This marks Jetta/Golf/Beetle(MK4) platform vehicle #11 for me. 1st green one, and 14th VW/Audi vehicle over all.

For those that know my past I was a VW/Audi/Porsche tech for many years. These are the vehicles that I am the most comfortable around. This car will be a bit different than most projects as it won't initially get worked on besides a list of things it will need to be 100% til spring.

My son is due to make his Grand appearance in 2wks. I want to spend as much time with him and my family as I can.

Now the reason I got such a killer deal on this is that the gentleman's daughter hit a deer and with 224k on the car they were just done with putting money into a 21yr old car.

I however was looking initially for a rwd/awd I6 powered sedan/wagon but decided to go back to what I was comfortable with, and here we are.

Awesome. My wife has a 96 Jetta Trek Olympics edition.
The upholstery in this thing has little pink and purple people playing sports and it came with a matching mountain bike.
It is a pretty rare Jetta.
It has about 260 k on it now and runs great.
In the 20 or so years That ive been working on this thing it has only made me loose my mind a few times.
The O ring for the oil cooler blew out. It puked all of its oil.
I was in a meeting with my phone shut off so she called her brother.
He poured more oil in. It barfed it out.
So he put more oil in.
It blew that out too.
So he put in some bardahl and some stp and some rislone
Not a VW problem. Just annoying as hell
By the time I got to it and pulled the pan that **** was thick enough to dip apples into.
Aside from having to replace the lower control arms every five years because of that bizarre bushing design the only other problem is that the sun roof switch can short out and open the roof on its own.
Found that one out when I looked out the front window one morning and the neighbors cat was sleeping on the dash.
The good news is that the roof switch only tends to short and open the roof during really heavy rainfall.
BTW folks, if this happens to you. Gently and carefully slide the overhead light cover to the rear. Underneath that light cover is a factory installed l shaped hex wrench in a bracket that you can use to close the sunroof manually.
Disconnect the wire from the roof so it doesnt happen again
You will loose the overhead light but it cant open on its own again
Other than that, replacing the heater core was all kinds of fun.
Open the door, remove everything inside the car right down to the firewall.
Buy some tools that you will never use again.
Bleed for a couple of days.
But you really get your VW beat up mad as hell tool throwing WTF knowledge from the alarm system.
I am three tow trucks into this thing including getting towed of off Mt Rainier when I was out of cigarettes and 6 hours later a rolloff showed up and it turns out that deep woods off melts plastic and I got my knee stuck to the dashboard while the wrecker driver was so busy freaking out on her side of the road that she wasnt paying any attention to the 4000 foot drop on my side
of the road.
It was a bit sketchy. But, in her defense. She was about 22 25 or so and it was her first run up to Mowich Lake.
Not easy in a flatbed.
And just tough as hell listening to Buck Owens.
Did not expect that but it was pretty damn cool.
So for about 500 bucks she got the car off of the mountain and took it to her brothers house.
Who I had never met. Who didnt know that we were dating. Who didnt know that she was not with her ex anymore.
It was a bit awkward.
Hi! how ya doin? nice meeting you and me and your sister are together and Im gonna just drop this dead Volkswagen in your front yard.
We dropped a whole lot of new info on this guy all at once.
He didnt now whether to **** or wind his watch.
It was the wiring harness from the A pillar into the drivers door.
Step one for diagnosing an alarm problem on a Veeb of that era is to set the overhead switch so the light comes on at door open.
Open the door. Light on switch is good.
If you dont get light on the 5 buck door switch is bad.
Sometimes it is that easy.
This gen of VW only has a key lock on the drivers door
And it uses an elictrically boosted vacuum system for the drivers door and the center of dash unlock for the door.
That door handle and its key need to work correctly.
Cheap and easy to replace.
The drivers door harness is the next thing to check.
It is a threaded multi pin screw in connector.
And very fragile.
The A pillar part is a big plastic nut that turns counter clockwise untill it hits a limit .
Dont force it.
When that nut reaches its limit, gently pull the connection rearward and disconnect the pins.
If it passed the door switch test I can almost gaurentee you that the harness is bad
But.
The tricky part is the reset.
On a Veeb of that era the alarm runs through the radio.
If you have the original owners manual.
They came with a card that has your 4 digit code on it.
Way in the back of the factory books.
Look deep. That code is like gold
The reset if you can find that 4 digit code is easy.
just in general and in my experiance whenever you have a disabling alarm going off the last thing you want to do is suddedly cut the power.
On the 90s with the vacuum interlock
Open the hood, next to the battery is a plunger switch.
Hold that down with whatever.
I use a chunk of 2x4 off of the firewall.
With all of the front windows rolled down
And all of the door locks manually locked.
Reconnect the battery.
Leave the hood open with the hood switch held down makes the system think that the hood is closed.

With the hood switch closed and the doors locked that car is now in a "locked" state
Keep in mind that though this very much applies to mid 90s to 2000s german cars I am only rattling on about VWs so take it all with a dram of Scotch.
If you have one of the many factory alarm systems the first thing to look for is a tiny little red blinking light right next to your drivers door lock knob.
Does it flash when you lock the door?
Does it quick flash and the alarm goes off.
Im kinda cozy with the jetta.
We are not freinds and I have AAA coverage and my brother has the keys to my truck and trailer
We carry food and water and a tent and if that ****** ever leaves me straded again i will beat that car with a baseball bat.
Yep, just a normal Volkswagen guy

@thinger2 I am glad I abhor the mk3, I have not owned a single one. A mk1 and a mk2 were in my garage for a bit but my love is the mk4(99-05) Jettas/Golfs. I don't care for the beetles.

Did some minor things but 1 is a big cosmetic change. The car had this gaudy gold pin stripe that I thought was painted on, turns out it was just vinyl, so it got removed from the whole car.

Also at some point the car got smacked in the rear, the trunk seal was shittly replaced and RTV'd on so I cleaned the RTV off and fixed the seal. I also found that the DS tail lamp was broken and just barely hanging on.
