You want something simple but don't want to install a cutoff switch of any kind? I'm confused. A cutoff switch is about the simplest effective means that will stop someone that isn't sufficiently determined to steal the truck.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that anything suggested here or on any other online forum can be read by thieves as well, making it less useful, so don't get too confident in anything you can read online. They already know pretty much every possible scenario one might imagine.

Someone earlier mentioned a dummy relay; this is simple yet I would not do it on the fuel pump relay of a Vortec truck. That socket in the convenience center is already electrically challenged. Without any owner intervention at all, these often run very hot and burn the pins and can melt the plastic around the socket. Frequent swapping of relays there will only end up causing you trouble in the long run. The starter relay would be smarter as it only sees occasional use vs. constant use like the fuel pump relay.

The ignition coil and module on a Vortec small block are easily reachable and simple to unplug either one - easier to reach than the distributor on your old El Camino. Also easy for a real thief to spot if they care to take the time.

Want something truly effective? Spend the bucks on a Ravelco. It'll take a tow truck to steal your vehicle, then. Mind you that happens too; scrappers use unlicensed tow trucks to steal older vehicles and run them across the scales, higher-end thieves steal tow trucks and snatch more valuable vehicles to chop up or VIN swap and re-sell.

Best of luck..

Can you do your own install for a ravelco? Looks like they only offer the product, if installed by them?

In short, no. Part of the security of it is they are only installed by Ravelco themselves, so the information isn't widely shared. I've seen a little bit of their product sold "loose" outside of the company but they are not supported by Ravelco and I'm unsure of the source; maybe installers that have gone out of business selling out inventory? I really don't know but I wouldn't trust it.

It's not a cheap option and may seem overpriced for the apparent simplicity of it but they do have a strong track record. Nothing is infallible but I'm going to throw all reasonable efforts toward keeping my truck. I've got five different anti-theft measures on my SS, most of which I won't mention for sake of the element of surprise. Ravelco is the most recent thing I've added, though.

Agreed Ive got an old 3 on the tree and it blows peoples minds to see you drive it. Like it some kind of sophisticated technology lol
Someone tried to steal my '74 with a 3 speed a couple months ago, but it was really difficult for them.

It used to be a 3 on the tree, but I swapped in a floor shifter keeping the column shift in place.

The thing that probably confused them is the fact that I pulled out the shifter and stashed it behind the seat every time I left the truck. The would be theif got the truck started, but couldn't get it out of reverse, so they ended up dumping the clutch a few times and shattering reverse in the trans.

At least it didn't get stolen, but I had to buy another trans on Craigslist and swap it in.

Ravelco? Never heard of it. Is it around $700? Installed?

Price varies depending on vehicle, but yes probably $700 on a GMT400, and comes with two plugs. If you're bad about losing things I'd get extra plug(s) $75/ea.

For what it's worth, a decent alarm system costs about the same but won't stop them from stealing the vehicle. It'll just (maybe) let you know someone's trying. The combination of the two technologies is a pretty good amount of protection.

I'm going back out to Denver next week, so I decided to make my Busurban a little more theft proof with 3 decoy switches, and one real one in a very, VERY clever spot.

The first of of the switches turns on the light on the dash while the second one (one labeled fuel pump) engages the A/C Compressor clutch. The third one does literally nothing, and the 4th one works as a fuel pump cut out.

The 4th one is exceptionally well hidden (I'm pretty proud of just how well it is).

I was also thinking about welding a nut to the brake pedal and adding a really sharp thread in spike to impail the foot of whoever tries to steal the truck (it's only a matter of time in Denver).
