Hey guys , how much should my camshaft move front to back once I install the retainer plate?

"Comp Cams suggests 0.004-0.010-inch of endplay"
The stock setup has more than that and its pretty much pointless to measure as there is no way to adjust it. The drag from the oil pump drive gear pulls the cam toward the rear of the block against the thrust surface of the cam timing sprocket while the engine is running.

Yup, I've never worried about it. Your cam retaining plate will secure the cam.

I found the GM spec in the L31 service manual of all things a Kohler generator. 0.001 to 0.009". I was a little off when I said it allowed more, but it has a looser spec than the one Comp quotes.

"Good Luck" getting .004--.010 end play on a step-nose cam with the OEM retainer plate.

Typical is .002--.003. And that's all you need.

Remember, the end-play "adjustment" is machined into the camshaft. If you don't like the end-play you achieve, you need a different cam.

Agreed! Is what it is. GM list the numbers I provided as serviceable. Then again they show that 0.009" compression ring end gap is also serviceable when most builders shoot for 2x that.

Thanks for the info everyone. I appreciate it.

I was also curious about the reluctor ring. Seems like it just sort of sits on the woodruff key. What keeps it from wiggling forward? Just the cover?

The harmonic balancer tightens up against it and the crank timing sprocket and keeps everything from moving
