I don't believe there's a wagon version of the Lexus. The "AWD" knocks out the 1971 Dodge Polara wagon with a 225 slant six I was hoping for.

Wikipedia says the first gen Lexus IS was only available as RWD, while the Toyota version (Altezza) was sold with AWD, but not here. The later generations didn't come in a wagon version. A third gen IS wagon would be pretty sweet, though.

Parts prices for GMT400s are pennies on the dollar to BMW parts.

My thoughts too. He would be money ahead to switch his project to a 2wd blazer or something like that.

It's easy "to never really get there" and constantly change projects based on what seems to fit life better. I was that way for years, but learned that It is a trap.

To each their own.

I would be ahead yes, but I was a vw/audi tech for years so I know what I am getting into in that aspect, I make good money so the cost of parts does not bother me. Like I have said I will be around still.

Step #1 - replace the plastic cooling system with aluminum. Parts prices for GMT400s are pennies on the dollar to BMW parts. Ask me how I know. Still, we want pics when it happens.
I have a complete coolant system revamp as #1 on the list along with other maintenance.
