Those are just the inserts, i meam the whole thing, the grills are so flimsy and all the attachment tabs are very prone to breaking

I think it's so big, and has so many compound curves and angles, it had to be made of plastic. Especially the later style. The one in my Burb had some cracking around some of the mounting tabs, and I think it's the original one. After bouncing around on our wonderful Houston roads for 23 years, I'm surprised it wasn't worse. But now I get to start over.....
I would wonder if the mounting points/tabs on the cheaper aftermarket grilles are sturdy enough. Haven't looked at any yet, but they gotta cut corners somewhere.

So If memory serves me right I went down this rabbit hole a few years back to find out this exact question. Circa 2009ish at a junkyard I DID TOUCH AND FEEL an ALL METAL GRILL. the only thing that wasnt metal was the vent slots and the emblem it was a chevy grille about 1996-1999 type with the bolstered horizontal lines. I remember seeing the chrome paint chipping off of it and thought it was odd. to this day I have yet to see another, and I convinced myself I must have been mistaken. the only reason I didn't take it at the time was:
1. was still early in my GMT400 knowledge no idea they didnt exist factory.
2. didnt need it I was there to get a new Trans cooler as I was a poor just out of HS kid+

To this day I still wonder If I had dreamt that ****. I cleary didnt dream that trip because I remember it was on a black truck

Are you saying this was a GM Chevy grille or aftermarket?

I'll go out on a limb and respectfully say you were mistaken. The chrome will chip off the plastic grilles, so don't let that part of it convince you. Especially on the older OEM grilles, the chrome plating is thicker than you might think it is, and when it cracked/peeled, it was almost like tearing apart a thin aluminum can.

All GMT400 grilles were plastic. Some chrome plated, some not.
