I don't mean to sound stupid, but can someone tell me what a prndl switch is verses the 4l60e neutral safety switch. Pretty sure it's the same thing but apparently not according to what I'm being told now by the people who tuned my truck. If anyone wants to hear some crazy stuff private message me and I'll give you some stories on what I've been dealing with on trying to get my new engine running and 0411 tuned correctly. Personally I'm ready to start beating my head against a brick wall.

Year helps. 1988-1994 use a simple park/neutral (also the reverse lamp switch function) safety switch very similar to what older trucks have. 1995-up have a "range switch" which indicates specifically what position the shifter is in for each possible position. That's how the indicator on your gauge cluster works, as well as the PCM knowing where the shifter is. Old style 1988-1994 is the crescent moon-shaped switch that snaps in on the lower end of the steering column near the firewall.. 1995-up range switch attaches on the side of the transmission where the shift selector stud comes out of the transmission.

I've always associated a neutral safety switch with a manual transmission. Therefore an automatic never had one...
The first picture would be called a "steering column position switch".

One connector is for P/N safety and reverse lights, and one is for the gear indicator and PCM.

So, 1 part, 2 connectors/functions. I've seen it called both names.

This sounds like a good topic for its own thread

Sure; but the older variant has a simpler function so just referring to it as "neutral safety switch" is common, when in fact it senses park, neutral, and reverse. The range switch on 95-up senses all positions - P, R, N, OD, D, 2, 1

I finally sent them a picture showing it called both and asked how they were adjusting it the other week if I didn't have one in the truck. Otherwise I'd have a mess of wires bypassing it. I've run into some crazy stuff here lately. Next time I'm putting a carburetor with TPS sensor and saying the heck with computer tuning.

Just out of curiosity - if you had a carburetor, what would you need a TPS sensor for?
