i think in park it should be 75 to 90 psi. it has been almost 10 years since i messed around with this, but i remember backing it off 1 click at a time and noting how much it took to press on the tv cable and watching the needle not move. this was an "ah ha!" moment from when i did my first overdrive (200-4r) swap behind a 305 2bbl and used the TH350 kick down stud. trans was overhauled and only lasted about 2 years of daily driving duties .

UPDATE: I reset the TV cable while at WOT. My shifts are right where they should be happening now. Weird - not sure how it would have just all of a sudden gotten tight over time?

It's still a bit clunky but I'm pretty sure this trans has been on its way out for a while and it still nonetheless seems to have some good life left so I'm gonna baby it until I have a better driveway or garage to hopefully do an NV3500 swap in the future. (Did I mention I've never driven stick? Just bored of the current setup.)

If a given vehicle was offered in stick shift form, that's the one I want. Granted, I've never had problems with the automatics in my life but I prefer to shift my own gears and the look of three pedals.

That's good news.

I'm wondering if it has a kit of some sort it in, to firm up the shifts. You said the prior owner replaced the trans. But regardless,...

You might try (even tho I might catch hell for this recommendation) loosening it ONE click. You're not going to hurt anything by doing this and taking it for a short test drive. I'm practically certain that the change won't be radical, but the shifts will soften a bit and may drop in speed a tad.

are all gears "clunky" or just the 1-2 shift? i am going to assume clunky means harsh.

your original description sounds like a problem with the servo/servo pin or possibly the 2/4 band going away. had a 700R4 that would slip really bad on 1-2 shift. on teardown found a previous builder had tried to modify the servo pin and it had actually dug into the band anchor.

Just 2-3 now. 1-2 and 3-4 you would not even notice if you had the A/C or music blasting.

The 2-3 shift on the 700R4 has it's share of complications b/c it requires a "band release / clutch apply" coordinated action to make the shift perfect. It's a known behavior. Whether it's a "problem" in your case is TBD, but don't expect 2-3 to nearly as nice as 1-2 or 3-4. It can be, but certainly may not be.

If you've got either a flare-up or a tie-up happening on 2-3, you might want to investigate / have a trans person look at it. @tayto may have some advice in this regard.

Now that you've developed your understanding of the TV cable and shifts... Is the lockup torque converter functioning correctly? There's often a bit of a bump when it engages, so it's not hard to tell when it's active. Some people mistaken believe it's a 4-5 shift, on account of the bump.

yes if it isn't "stock" it could be a shift timing issue. excessive servo clearance or 3/4 clutch pack can cause issues. you can play around with orifice sizing in the separator plate by dropping the valve body. but, i bet a corvette servo would fix your issue unless your trans has one already.
