My 89 has odd wiring, I think it’s because someone did a dash/interior swap and left some stuff from the original interior in place. That reflects when I have to have the Climate Control set to recirculate for the cargo light to work. And the needle has to be on E for it to be full, and F to be empty.

So as someone previously mentioned, the cargo lamp ties into the dome light ground. The ground for the cargo light on the plug is white (there's 2 white wires, the second one is the power for the 3rd brake light). You just need to take the ground wire from position A in the plug and ground it into the black wire. And don't worry, the back of the plug is marked A-D. After you do that, cap the other end of the ground wire so it doesn't ground out and leave your dome lights on

Well, beat me to that, interesting that it's a white ground wire, cant say I see that often. Thank ya for the write up, should make things much easier when I get to it!

It is interesting, especially being right next to a white power cable as well. But, i just recently did it and it works like a charm. It bypasses every "safety" feature gm did with the cargo light. It even works while in gear and driving too

Oh that'll be nice! Well I got my auxiliary lights hooked up, so that and an egr code I've got, are all I've got left to deal with. So one of these days, better if I do it from the third brake light itself, or is there a better point to give it it's own ground?

Just for easability, I'd personally recommend just grounding at the 3rd brake light. Because i also did it for the cargo lights on my mirrors as i plan to put high output lights in the mirrors instead and also use them as aux backup lights

Probably what I'll do then, appreciate it. That's not a bad idea, I just threw some 6" bars on each side underneath the rear bumper, but if the mirrors work as well, go for it

You just take the ground coming from the light and give it its own ground. From the factory it is tied into the dome light ground
Can you please elaborate on this.

The Plug On the Truck Side that goes into the 3rd brake light. Cut the wire and ground the pigtail side on its own to the truck. Other end truck side, cap/seal it so it doesn't cause issues? which wire is it?

I know this is an old thread, but I think I'd like to do this too. Subscribed to help myself remember, and I'll let everyone know how it goes!
