Like others have said, it takes time and money, anything's possible if you got the skills to fabricate and get creative, especially since these trucks never came with any other diesel except a 6.2/6.5L. To answer your question, 5.9L Cummins 12v all day long. However, a 4BT Cummins isn't a bad engine either.

I would do a Cummins 4BT as a first choice or a 12 valve if I was towing heavy.

I really do not like diesels but those are reliable and simple. No computer controls.

The 6 cylinder engines are a bit too long for an easy fit into our trucks.

They came with a MWM 4.2 I6 too. 3 valve per cylinder diesel. Same basic engine also went into some F250s.

What’s available for fueling mods on those Detroit engines?
Not much. Depends on if you have the DB2 or DS4 pump. The DB2's can be turned up fairly easily. Not sure about the DS4. You can get marine injectors but they don't do much good with out a tune and turbo. I'm sure there are a few more things out there but I've never looked into it because I've never really thought about doing any mods like that to mine. I might maybe some day do a HX40 turbo just to get rid of the shiit turbo gm came up with.

I know I kicked off the "stupid ideas" by recommending a 6V92, but I think a 4-71 would be more "appropriate" than either 6 cylinder,. It's still 1800 lbs. You'd be building a play toy. Hop up parts? Larger injectors, porting, maybe graft a 6-71 or 8-71 blower in place of the 4-71, but good luck finding those parts. The -71 series blocks ended production almost forty years ago. Your best bet for even finding a 4-71 is shopping Air Force surplus for an A/M32-86 generator, and it's gonna be a ragged out mess. Then you gotta find tech data with part numbers and procedures for "running the rack" - i.e. performing a tune-up.

I suppose anything is doable with enough money and a welder, but the 71 is probably still too big. The 4-53 is usually the chosen Detroit 2-stroke to get swapped into a pickup, and there have been a few 6v-53s done, but that's a more difficult fit, from what I've read.

Edit: for more power, you'd want a turbo on a 2-stroke. The blowers are not super chargers on a 2-stroke Detroits.
