Good day all,

I bought my grandson a 1993 GMC Sierra 1500, 5.7, std cab, 4L60e, long bed. The truck has not reverse. Driving it home, it loss 1st gear. I attempted to push the driveshaft forward out of the rear diff saddle with a large pry bar-*, it would not budge. I searched google and saw that a stuck driveshaft is not an uncommon event. I removed the tranny tailshaft and sprayed some PB Blaster, still no movement. I ended up dropping the rear axle and it finally came out.

I took the driveshaft and put it on the replacement a tranny and it was still there was no slip action. It feels like the tranny goes all the way in with no slip. Before I get this all buttoned up, does the yoke slip or not? I will look up the driveshaft length details and measure, if for some odd reason it was incorrectly replaced previously.

Thanks for the advise.

I believe the proper installation is to push the slip yoke all the way until it bottoms out (make a mark with sharpie against the seal), then slide it out 3/4". That's where the driveshaft needs to be located.

I'm assuming it's stock height?

How do the splines on the output shaft look like? The yoke splines look okay?

It should move in and out with suspension travel as well as move in for driveshaft removal there may be a glob of grease or something else in the driveshaft yoke, I believe there was a bulletin sometime to pack it with grease for clunking when putting it in gear

Thank you all for the feedback.

Truck is stock height. Output shaft splines look good. Will be getting the slip yoke replaced, it has an entire spline missing.
The entire splines of the yoke are gone?yikes!

How do think that happened? Where did the metal go? Maybe they previously replaced the yoke with a beat up one?

The missing spline is on purpose. It is either the master spline and lines up with its correspondant on the output shaft or an air bleed.

After looking at several new yokes, it seems the missing spline is not missing but designed as such. Thanks L31Max.

I ordered and received a new yoke from RockAuto, it slips in and out like butter. A side by side comparison of the 2 yokes, the original is about a 1/4' to 3/8' longer than the new. Also, the bearing holes are much larger. PN I got from RockAuto was a Spicer 3-3-4281X. I will be sending it back and taking the driveshaft and old yoke to the local driveline shop in the morning.
