Good evening everyone,

First, I would just like to thank everyone who helped me out a few weeks ago with my AC and cooling system issues and install questions. Both systems are 100% new and working great! You guys are awesome!

Now it seems, I'm having a new issue... Since I purchased the truck back in March, I've never had an issue with it starting. Always fires right up. However, on Wednesday, I was leaving a restaurant after grabbing some food, I turned the key, there was a 2-3 second pause, and THEN the truck turned over and fired up. When I got home, I turned it off and tried it again. Partial crank, then silence, then it turned over and started. Yesterday after work, I hopped in and ran to the store. Fired right up. Came out of Walmart, got in, pause, then fire. Today, same thing. Fired up, went to the store, got back in to leave, hesitation and then fire. I'm assuming that my starter is going up? Or perhaps just the solenoid? It's odd to me that it seems to happen after it's been driven, shut off and then restarted soon afterwards. Rather then just replacing the starter right away, I decided to replace the relay and 40 amp and 50 amp fuse. Afterwards, it started perfectly. 20 mins later, a slight hesitation again. Do you guys think it's definitely the starter? Or are they some other things I could check out first? Something electrical? Any and all information is, as always, greatly appreciated!

If it does in fact turn out to be the starter and I need to replace it, I would like to know what style/brand you guys suggest. I figured I would upgrade to gear reduction if I have to yank it. Should I consider a high-torque mini, since I plan to upgrade the headers in the near future? Powermaster? Proform? Stick with AC Delco? Any other suggested brands?

Thank you in advance for your time, help and expertise,

Kyle

WHAT VEHICLE?

Is the battery fully-charged? Alternator works properly? Cables 'n' wiring not corroded, tight, good condition?

Half of all starter problems are in the battery. Half of all battery problems are in the alternator. A fifth of all battery, starter, and alternator problems are in the wire harness or alternator belt/tensioner.

My bad...My truck is a 1997 Chevy K1500 Silverado 5.7.

Battery is fully charged and I've had no reason, as of yet, to suspect that there are any issues with the alternator. I haven't actually traced every wire on the harness to inspect for damage. Everything that I've come across during repairs has been in good shape. Again, until now, I've had to reason to suspect any issues with the harness.

I've replaced the big, old-style direct-drive starter motors on about half of my Chevy engines with the newer Permanent Magnet Gear Reduction (PMGR) OEM starters.

Works great on my '88 K1500 5.7L. Works less-great on my '97 K2500 7.4L. (Starter grinds. May be faulty starter, worn flexplate, or needs a shim.) Both starters DO have the correct starter bolts. See bulletin attached. Your '97 probably has a PMGR starter already.

Beware sellers claiming their starters are "PG260" but don't look like the photos in the bulletin.
