This is my buddies first truck that we’re going to be working on for a while. As he gets funds for it.

It came with a 3 or 4inch body lift not installed.

It’s a 1986 Ram 150
4x4
Automatic
5.2L 318ci V8
True dual glass pack, no cats, with a large exhaust leak
Cleanish interior
No rust
Nice dash

Needs a tune up (spark plug wires are bad and runs on 6cyl right now)
Needs tires
Needs tint
Body is in good shape

It’s going to be a fun project and definitely a learning experience for both of us.

My friend does not have much experience working on cars, so I’ll probably know more about his truck than he will. I’m super excited about this though!

Love that era of dodge trucks. Grandpa had a 86 d250 that I drove to the pond to go fishing several times while he ran the pedals. Nostalgic of course but pretty solid trucks. Watch for vacuum leaks around the throttle blade shaft and of course wiring. Following because it's cheaper to live vicariously through others right now lol

I had a RCSB '84 W150 Royal SE Prospector III, I bought new, with a 360 thermal quad, 727 torque flight trans, and a NP 206 (IIRC) transfer case. I loved that truck, I beat the hell out of it towing too big a goose neck trailers and other farm equipment all over the place. After 206,000 miles I had to rebuild the engine, transfer case and rear end were already done at ~100,000 miles. Drove it for another 40,000 before I sold it in '96. Those trucks were built strong but the body and doors - not so much. I always had to use the 2X4 door adjustment procedure a couple times a year

Edit: Changed it from D150 to W150 which was Dodge's designation for a 4X4.

Alright. So our “first” problem’s. We did wires, cap, and rotor today. Took it around the block and it wouldn’t accelerate. It would take a really long time to get up to speed. It would shift from 1-2, but we weren’t able to get up to speed enough to get it to shift again. The speedometer needle is all over the place, and there is a ticking under the dash.
The fuel pump is also thumping very harshly.

Any ideas? It will rev up in park, but not in drive, and I didn’t try neutral. It’s a new transmission. Maybe a/the transmission cable needs tightening?

I don't know much about that era. I'm assuming it has a carb and distributor.

Check advance weights on the distributor, could be stuck.

If this is a carb, check the accelerator pump.

I've never really been a "Mopar" guy or even really a fan of Chrysler until my brother bought a 87' Ram Charger a few years ago. It was drivable, but needed some TLC. I've spent the last year helping him work on it, and it's starting to grow on me.

I don’t have time to check it out again today. I’m leaving town ,for a few days at least, tomorrow. So I’ll get back to y’all next week maybe. Thanks for sharing!
