Brakes for towing

Do not tow heavy, these trucks were not meant for it. 10k max if you want to be able to stop safely.
The skid steer weights about 5500 pounds so it will be under that (bobcat s70 I believe is the model) and yes most definitely with trailer brakes.

I’m not sure how to tell the difference between the vacuum and hydro boost but from what I researched it and sounds like the vacuum has the bigger round piece with the diaphragm? I wasn’t able to check my truck today but I came across a picture I took when I was changing the spark plugs. Maybe you can tell, to me it looks like vacuum?

Also I haven’t noticed anything leaking but I will go over it and look for leaks. I’m my opinion the truck has been pretty well taken care of as I bought it from original owner.

You have a big block with vacuum brakes, odd. Next step is to put eyes on the rest of the system and see if it's up to ***** in its current form.

Thank you for clarifying. So next step is looking for leaks and I’m also going to try that temperature on the rear brakes as a member previously said.

Should I look into a conversion for the hydro or is that opening a can of worms?

Hydroboost is PFM, not at all a can of worms. It does require you get a pedal, booster, and lines, but is worth the effort I can assure you of that. Before that though, what is the state of health of your braking system? Pads, recency of fluid change, etc?

I’m going to have to look into the pads and fluid on Saturday. I’m going to also do some research on the conversion.

If I acquired one of these trucks at this point in its life, one of the first things I would do, whether I planned to tow with it or not, is remove the gas tank and replace the hard brake line that goes to the rear axle with a stainless one. There are surprisingly few good times for a brake line to rupture.

Just to back up this statement - I have an 8 lug (wheeled) k2500 that has vacuum boost brakes.

We have a 1988 5.7 SRW K3500 with vacuum assist…

…and a 1998 5.7 K2500 w/ hydroboost. This truck was bought used; original owner had a 5th-wheel hitch on it so I assume he may have optioned it with hydroboost, perhaps as part of an HD or trailering package.
