Yes a small can or a pill bottle works well for this. The cup holder must've been designed by someone who was addicted to Starbucks or had to have their coffee cup in the truck. The only thing that doesn't move around much in the Burb ( in that cup holder) is a Whataburger or other brands 44 ounce styrofoam cup.
Now the slide out one, gotta be careful how big and tall a cup you put in there...or it'll fall out if you hit bumps or take a corner very fast.

So I have the center console cup holders built in along with the dash pull outs. The CC ones are awesome the can hold a 32oz Gatorade bottle!!! But that means losing your bench or doing/getting that out from the bottom cup holder but really if you have 2 drinks thee more important one or just more likely to spill goes into the deep one just rules on logic. Or get you a rear seat that has the pull down armrest with cup holders in it? Here’s pics of my CC holder and rear seat with armrest down to see cup holders it will be a lil different do to mine being a Escalade vs Tahoe Yukon with cloth seats.

The front part, where the cup holders are, is very similar to what my '99 LT (leather seats) Suburban has. I haven't tried to see if the back part opens up like yours; that's a cool little desk for a mobile office. I have the larger part of the second row seat folded, for more load carrying capacity. When I go to a swap meet, I have the heavy boxes and totes on that part so the weight is ahead of the axle. For a small toy show, like last weekend, I can put all my boxes there, and load in/out through the side door instead of the back.
If I load my Burb carefully, I can fill it up about to the headliner and it just levels it out, the way it sits.
It's hardly ever empty; always things to carry for work,or stuff that just needs to stay in the truck. And there's only 3 of us at the most, riding in it, so the seat configuration works.

With practice, yep, you can get a lot in these trucks! Since the 4 door Escalade has the spare underneath, that makes a little more room. I've had trucks with spare underneath and in the back like the Burb has, and I like the inside mount even though it takes up a little space. Harder to steal and the attaching mechanism works much better!

I came across this how-to for split bench while looking for ideas for improving console with bucket seats.
I like it, I'm brand new to the website, just picked up a very nice 1998 Single cab with 72k original miles for my 15 year old son will be his first vehicle . I have been around cars and trucks my whole life but I haven't kept up with all the mods over the past few years. We were just discussing the cup holder issue in our truck the other day and I mentioned the idea of putting them in the center console. Thanks you've helped me out. I will be doing something very similar.
