It this normal to see 24 degree at idle and instant drop to 10 degrees under even the lightest load? Knock sensor is not tossing codes.

Bad distributor. The insides are wiped out and its "WALKING" I have been there.

Knock sensors don't throw a "code" every time they detect knock.

The timing can be retarded due to knock without setting a "code".

Connect a scan tool, look at the knock sensor signal vs. timing advance. May as well look at all the other sensors and computer outputs while the scan tool is connected.

Yes, distributor problems are common; but I don't know why a distributor would retard timing under load.
