NYS is behind Commiefornia for emissions BS, and all the years I e owned these trucks I’ve never seen one. My 08 Tundra had one. Hewett Performance makes a bypass kit for these are that are unfortunate to have the system. It tricks the ECM to think that the vehicle is warmed u n not required to pump cold air into a hot exhaust to help warm it up. (whose the f*ckin genius who thought of that) and it will pass Inspection and emissions.

I was thinking the same. Electric on my wifes Impala, electric on all the Trailblazers. But both those are mid or later 2000's. Cant recall any RWD vehicle having electric A.I.R. systems pre-1999.
LT1s had them, even OBD1 versions. Caprice, Roadmaster, Fleetwoods, Corvette and F-car. I have used one as a crankcase vacuum pump.

The solution is REALLY SIMPLE.
Buy headers with an AIR connection.

I did, twenty years ago, when I re-engined my '88 K1500. There is ZERO need to disable the AIR system. It's not costing you power, it's not screwing with driveability. You won't get better fuel economy by deleting it.

My 99 tahoe originally had AIR injection. It only runs for 30 seconds on start up. You can just unplug it, remove all the plumbing and cap the ports on the headers if you do not need it to pass smog. There werent any long tube headers back then that had connections for AIR injection so i took a set of hooker headers for a tbi truck and added o2 bungs, egr fitting and air injection fittings. Got rid of all of the air injection stuff when I LS swapped my truck.

My 98 never had it, but it was not a CA version either. Yet another reason for me to not live in CA.

My 98 2 door has it, it’s called the secondary air injection. It is a California emissions vehicle also. I’ve just replaced my exhaust manifold gaskets and in process of going back together. I actually took all that piping for that nonsense off. As of now my 2door is now 25yrs old and emissions exempt. I’m not messing with EGR or removing cats….just taking off the electric air pump, check valves, and all the hoses that go with it. Just get a sheet of exhaust gasket material from fel-pro is like $8. Cut it to the shape and put a small piece of flat bar or whatever you have on hand to plug the hole and just use the two bolts to snug ot down. It’s now blocked off. You could also just run a plug tap for the air port in the center and put a stainless plug in it. There’s a few different ways to do it. As far as a tune….you don’t need it. The pump does not come on when your driving. It’s only suppose to pump air to exhaust stream to heat your O2 sensors up quicker. Not much help here in Houston where it stays hot and doesn’t need any help warming up. HAHA

Hey this sounds awesome, but where do I find a set of headers with the air provisions, can’t find them!
