Hi all - asking for some advice / opinions. I have a '98 1500 with the 5.7, 4x4 / 4L60E, and ~200K on the ODO.
Recently, it's been shaking under load in overdrive. It's worst if I'm going up a hill and give it some gas to maintain speed - it will shake unless I let off the gas or give it enough for it to downshift. I've tried stepping on the brake slightly while it's shaking (to test TC lockup) and the shaking does not stop. I towed a small trailer recently, and the shaking was exacerbated (happening with any amount of acceleration in OD).

Engine has ~60K miles on it and trans was replaced ~3 years ago with an unknown mileage unit, but has been solid since. Do you suspect a trans issue? Maybe u-joints? I put a tube of ShudderFix in with no change (generally not a fan of magic solutions, but figured why not try). No codes / lights on dash. Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks!

Here's what's applied or holding in OD of a 4L60e. It seems like everything that's applied in OD is applied on the other gears, which you state work fine. I believe the Forward Clutch has a sprag, which perhaps has some wear on the race and causes vibration only under load? That would be consistent with your observation about towing. (But looks like sprag is not holding per that chart, so likely not the problem...?)

Does it do under a specific RPM? Or just all the time? i.e., more RPM = more shaking? Maybe some planetary gearset is worn. They tend to wear and wobble...or a bushing is worn?

Simple things first. I'd check plugs, cap & wires. You may not be getting misfire codes, but that doesn't mean (least not to me) that it isn't actually misfiring.

Ujoints should be the first thing to check
...and then...
- trans & engine mounts.
- trans tail shaft bushing. Check for play. A bad one will usually take out the seal. Got moisture?
- pinion bearing. A/A.
- wheel bearings. Ditto.
- wheel balance. (tossed a weight?)
- u-bolts & lower plates. Rust! The bolts turn to dust out of easy view.

This is also correct. You need a certain number of logged misfires in a time frame for it to throw a code, and the black box isn't great about that.

Another thing it could be is converter shudder, my 1500 did that eons ago with the 4L60.

Appreciate the quick replies, guys. Since the engine is newer (~60K miles on crate w/ everything new & no codes), I sorta dismissed that, but I suppose that's the age when this stuff begins to fail. I'll check plugs / wires / U-joints this weekend. Would the U-joints only cause vibration at a specific speed / gear? That's what led me to believe it was the trans, but I suppose it could be hitting a certain frequency they don't like.

The output shaft seal looks OK and I don't see any trans fluid leaks. Had wheels balanced not too long ago due to the shake, so should rule this one out as well.

Thanks for the info. It seems more speed / gear-related than RPM; I'm really only in OD under load on the highway and relatively low RPMs (1-2K), otherwise it would shift down into 3rd and the shake would then stop

Your not supposed to tow under load in OD.
Ever miss a shift, and grab a higher gear? Shudder, shake, OMFG I'm dieing here. Could this be your problem?
