Small updates!

I installed an MSD Streetfire box because I had it free from another truck that got parted out. I didn’t think it would do much, but it actually made a noticeable difference in low RPM running quality, mainly during the periods when the transmission likes to lug the engine a bit. It’s enough of a difference where I might just consider this a ”standard” modification for these trucks now.

Speaking of the transmission lugging the engine, I also made a small modification to the governor, by removing the lighter spring from the inner weights. This moved my shift points higher so that it doesn’t pseudo-stack shift like these 700R4’s love to do in stock form. It feels like I actually have space between each gear now!

I'd put that spring back in place and tighten the TV cable one notch. That's likely the cause of your stacked shifts, and it'll destroy your transmission if it isn't fixed.

It’s not. This is a common mod for stock level transmissions, which this one is. The springs control the part throttle shifts and raise the RPM at which the governor forces a shift. The 700R4’s were an economy transmission, especially in the later years. Paired with high gears and 2-3-4 Lockup, they normally are all in by 35-40 MPH in stock form. Great for economy, terrible for spirited driving.

I used this kit to get shifts 1-2 @ ~15 and 2-3 @ ~35 mid throttle and ~5000 at WOT.

TC lockup is in 3rd or 4th, not 2nd unless you modify "TCC- MPH Mandatory Lock" in the .bin

That’s about where it shifts currently with just the light spring removed. Works well for cruising around town, but I’ll probably lighten up the heavy spring a bit as well when I change the rear gears eventually.

700R4’s were also built with 3 lockup settings - 4th only, 3rd and 4th only, and 2-3-4 lockup. I’m not aware of what logic GM used to determine which trucks got each setup, but this is far from the only one I’ve had that runs 2-3-4 lockup from the factory.
