Same weak brass 90 the TBI setup uses.. be super careful you don't snap it off. It's way weaker than you think it is. Imagine heater hose quick-connect fitting..

Interesting, I thought the brass part was a TBI, thing.... so it's a small block thing?

If it's oily under there, I wonder if it's already cracked.

Small block thing. You can see the hex-shaped head of it and the sender screwed into it at a 90° angle, just begging for someone to put a socket on the sender and snap the whole thing off flush with the block. ;)

The leak is almost surely a failed sender; very common failure. The elbows don't crack on their own, but they can break very easily when you go to remove the sender.

Nice, y'all are really making me want the shop to deal with it!
And... that's where we are now.

We'll...they got the sending unit changed, no problem. But now the truck won't start, not even for me. Battery is a month over 3 years old, which is about as long as they last us. They're putting it back on the lift.

Ok, I was thinking the weight of the sender sticking out on one side might stress the brass after awhile. My sender did not leak. I was surprised that the area was not oil saturated on my engine. It just stopped reading reliably.

What's the preventaitive fix for this.... swapping to a galvanized pipe nipple and elbow? I assume the thread is NPT.

Only 3 years? Wow, I guess it must be your heat. I had one in my Saturn that was 10 years old, and they usually last about 7 in my truck.

You could but, if you do, use black iron pipe. Galvanized pipe will flake and send debris throughout the system. Brass is fine since it's fairly soft and will flex somewhat absorbing vibrations.

The sending unit is bad, he tells me as I'm paying for the starter and battery replacement. So Wednesday I'll be going back there to get that changed out. In the meantime I don't have a working oil pressure gauge...nice!
