I'd actually replace my DRL fuse if I could easily wire it to the 194, I think.

At least on the 1998 trucks, the DRL system can't be easily (re)deployed to power the city lights. If one wishes to use the city lights as a "DRL", a separate power lead needs to be run to them, e.g., from a switched source or equivalent. If one wishes to use them as "city lights", they can be easily powered from the existing parking light circuit. In either case they can be grounded by splicing into the existing grounds for the headlights, or equivalent.

For reference, the DRL function in 1998, when active, powers the low beams through two diodes (which are there to simply reduce the applied voltage).

See the attached schematic (.pdf) with my comments within.

Power is delivered to the headlights by two leads, one LtGRN (wired to the highs) and the other TAN (wired to the lows); these leads run from the firewall, through a loom along the driver's side fender, to the radiator support / headlights. The LtGRN and TAN wires are readily accessible in that loom as it runs along the fender, e.g., to be cut / spliced to power relays for a "4-high" or other improvement.

There is no separate wire related to the DRL function.

Here are a couple of wiring diagrams that one might use if they wanted to add their own relays to power the headlights. The "city light" wiring isn't shown. Daniel Stern produced these drawings which I then modified to make them specific to the GMT400 1998 model year (and presumably other year's GMT400s too). Daniel, thank you for creating these.

That's too bad. I guess I don't really understand what city lights are. I tried Googling it awhile back, and I wasn't finding a clear explanation.

I didn't realize the voltage was reduced. One of the reasons I decided to pull the fuse was that I would blind people in front of me in the drive-thru.

I didn't realize the voltage was reduced.

It's supposed to be, but any 4-Hi setup that powers the low beams from a relay will generally override that function. Hence the reason for the disclaimer on some of the relay kits (like the one from LMC) about not using them on trucks with DRLs. Not saying that's necessarily why you didn't notice the reduced voltage, just something to be aware of.

I have not fixed it on my burb yet, but drl mode is higher output than when turning headlights on with the switch. They get dimmer if not in drl mode. Headlight switch must be in poor shape. I think you could take output from drl under the dash and use separately
