Squarer than that. See pics. Final pic is with it twisted 90 degrees. Others are as it sits viewed from above.

Agreed, the part looks unlike a GM part (no part numbers or markings that I can find) but the way it is mounted - a push in fitting to a hole in the steel work and typical GM foam - and the way the wiring disappears into the main harness does smack of factory fit.

Assuming it isn't GM, and there is no additional security features that I'm aware of (though I believe the truck spent its first few years in Spain owned by the UN) what's it likely to be? Some sort of tracker?

Only other thing I could think of, is a resistor for something at the rear. For sure that's factory though. My burb has it and I'm sure other members have that too

There looks to be a lot of electronics in that wee box!
My 'Burb has it's rear lights wired differently - what were previously reversing lights are now indicators (turn signals) with orange bulbs and the 'red' lights are side lights (first position of light switch) and brake lights. What's in the box looks like more than needed to achieve that change.

The red lights are side lights and brake lights here as well. Interesting change in the turn signals though. What do you use as reverse lights?
