Is it necessary to pull the dash for this project or can these systems be reached from underneath? I have done it on an S10 and a squarebody so I know what a mess it can be.

A complete overhaul can't be done just from underneath. I disconnected the dash at both ends, dropped it down on the driver's side, and high and way back on the passenger side. I didn't take it clear out, not wanting to disconnect the wiring coming thru the firewall. It was enough that everything was accessible. From there I was able to remove the entire plenum with guts intact and do the rebuild on the bench. I'm 82 yrs. old and have done a lot of mekaniking over those years and this is nearly the worst of it in memory I have ever had to do. That includes hand lapping valves and seats in a flathead. It would almost be worth it to buy another truck with a working A/C system. I would not want to see anyone shot over the design but there should have been some GM engineers made to pay with hard time.
